Outback Steakhouse - Mesquite

This is a little higher priced meal than we normally partake of. However, I have several clients that own a percentage of Outback Steakhouse. These clients occasionally will send me a gift card. So tonight we ate here for less than the price of most of the restaurants we eat in. That's a good thing.

Mitcho's favorite steakhouse is Steak N Ale. I know they are all closed right now. However, they are in the planning stages of re-opening a restaurant. Till then I will have to get my steakhouse experience at Outback among others in the Mesquite area. But I am still dreaming of a Kensington Club!!!

Tonight I ordered the Chicken on the Barbie. This is a chicken breast grilled. This entre comes with a barbeque sauce that is very tangy. My only beef about this meal tonight was I ran out of bbq sauce 1/2 way through the meal. Giving it a 7.

The meal comes with one side, so I ordered a baked potato all the way. I enjoyed the bake potato, however, even I can cook a baked potato that is tasty. So it gets a 5.

I also ordered a salad that you have to pay extra for. However, they have a pretty good salad. I really enjoyed the salad and the fresh bread that is served with it. This is a 7.

Overall, Outback get's a 7. Shh don't tell my clients they didn't score any better, they might stop the gift cards.

This is one of the wifey's favorite places, so I scored some point tonight. Way to go Mitcho.

Until next time.

Cracker Barrell - Mesquite

First of all, I want to be sure you know that I just barely meet the minimum age to enter Cracker Barrel. We had an early dinner at 5:00 and met friends coming out after eating dinner. There just should be a rule against eating that early.

After our failure to eat somewhat healthy at Luby's earlier this week, we took the vegetable run at Cracker Barrel. Between us we ordered 6 vegetables.

The pinto beans had a pretty good taste. They had either bacon or ham (I couldn't tell) and a small about of spice. They weren't anything I will brag about, but they were pretty decent. They get a 6.

Then onto the hashbrowns casserole. I have had these before and remember them being just barely OK. But tonight it tasted like they might have added some cheese to them and they were pretty decent tonight. So giv em a 6.

Finally, I went to the Fried Apples. Now this is more of a dessert than a vegetable. These had a sauce on them that was probably loaded with brown sugar. Pass me another helping of them. This here is a 7.5.

Wifey also had mashed tators and fried okra(she also had pinto beans for those that are counting). She seemed to enjoy them but didn't make any specific comments. She was probably afraid I would want to share them with her.

I was eyeing the pecan pie-chocolate brownie-Blue Bell ice cream dessert when the phone rang and I had to leave to do some ministry work. Sounds like next time will be better.

Service tonight was spotty. I don't like running out of iced tea! Service gets a 4.

Tonight they get a 6.5

Zeke's Kitchen - Italian Sub

Yipper, back to one of my favorites, Zeke's Kitchen, open only for lunch Monday to Friday. So order two, take one home for a midnight snack.

One of my tests for a restaurant when I am travelling is there a good group of people in the restaurant at 12:00 noon or a 6:00 pm. The good ones always have a good group of people there. Well that is how it was today at Zeke's. How do you cram that many people into a fairly quaint place?  Nobody was complaining.

Today I ordered the Italian Sub special. This was the special of the day. I was too busy talking to determine if this is on the regular menu or not. If it is not, then I will be joining the off menu scene. You know, I was dogging off menu last week, but maybe there is a place for it.

I am not sure of all of the ingredients in this sandwich, but it was the absolute best Italian sub I have ever had. I have eaten Subway's version, Quiznos (which was probably my favorite until today) and a number of real restaurants across the county. Oh my, Slap My Mammy. I can't describe sufficiently how good that sandwich was. Let me tell you, it wasn't no minature sub either. That baby filled the basket from one end to the other. Always a good thing.

I also got the Charro beans. Like the sandwich, beans was only one of many ingredients in the bowl of beans. Very spicy and very tasty. Mitcho likes!!!

As I have said before, I am only going to have two 10's, so the Zeke's Italian sub gets a 9.85+.

Luby's Cafeteria - Gus Thomasson Mesquite

Everyone should occasionally eat a healthy meal. I try to at least once a month whether I need to or not. So I normally pull into Luby's and do the vegetable plate. So the wifey and me decided to sacrifice tonight and eat healthy. So off we went.

I had a garden salad, mash potatoes and fried okra with a roll.

The garden salad had several of the bottom ends of a head of lettuce. Just what I always wanted was the extra hard to chew part of lettuce, with no taste. Otherwise the salad was decent, but I have never had a salad with this part of the lettuce included before, and I have been in some cheap places in my time. I rate the salad a 4.

On to the mash potatoes. Now it has to be pretty hard to mess up a bowl of mash potatoes. They looked runny and I started to pass on them, but I decided I came to eat the mashed taters, so I am getting them. Big mistake. I have never had such large lumps of uncooked, solid potato which was almost inedible. The mashed taters get a 3. Things are not looking good here.

Finally I turn to the okra. Now okra is good redneck food, but not this stuff. The okra was usual size, but the veins that run down the side were like sticks. You have to pick okra at the right time or they are way too tough to eat. If you are chopping the okra to cook and you have to use a chain saw to cut them, you might want to throw the okra away and get another one. I only could stand to eat 1/2 of the bowl, but I examined the rest of the bowl and found that they were just as tough. The Okra gets a 1.

The roll with butter was decent, but after everything else here, a decent 7 roll only gets a 4.5.

Since the purpose was to eat healthy, we split a piece of chocolate pie. The pie looked pretty good. Looks were deceiving. It was ok, it just barely had any taste. Give the pie a 5.

Overall, Luby's gets a 3.5 tonight.

This rating won't get any better soon, because Mitcho won't be going back anytime soon.

NOTE: Mitcho is actually a big fan of the Furr's Garden restaurant on 635 in Garland (at Centerville). This is all you can eat (always a plus for a good redneck) and the food always is tasty. There is a large variety of choices which is always pleasing. Oh, wait I am reviewing Luby's,

till next time - Mitcho

Crumbzz Tasting Pavilion - S Bois D Arc Forney

First of all, the front door should have a sign "Rednecks should not enter!!!!". This is your souffle and quiche kind of fufu place. It is open for breakfast and lunch. 1/2 block south of the Forney square, if Forney has a square.

I had my wifey and M-I-L with me. I wanted to give M-I-L a lunch she could talk to her friends about. Unfortunately she is much closer to being a redneck than a high cotton fufu girl.

The service (probably the owner) was nice and helpful. However, the kitchen was terribly slow. The M-I-L had business to tend to right after lunch and was very close to being late and we had allowed more time than would normally be necessary. So the girls had trouble enjoying their food because they were running out of time. So, don't go here if you have plans for the afternoon!!! I rate service a 3.5 because of the kitchen (they are part of their team, maybe).

I ordered Iced Rooibos Signature Tea. This is the signature tea for the restaurant. The tea came in a fairly small glass at $3.00. I was concerned that this was $3.00 per glass, as I saw no one get a refill the whole time I was there. When we got the tea, I determined that it had a funny taste. So I let the wifey try it. She immediately said it tasted like "Robitussin cough syrup". I agree with her. The tea may be expensive but it is a 4 or less.

I searched the menu for Redneck food and was disappointed at best. There were only two choices that I might make work. There was a grilled cheese sandwich for $8.50 and San Miguel Nochalette for $8.00. Being a tightwad and wanting to give you different experiences on my blog, I went with the San Miguel Nochalette. Now this is Tuna with Cheese on a Tostito. Wifey was expecting a large enough plate we could share. However, I bet that Nochalette meant very little nacho. I was right, 9 small chips total. Now, I had never thought about Tuna on a nacho before. I am a fan of Tuna Patties, but nachos, not so much. There was plenty of cheese which dialed down the tuna flavor to an acceptable level. Hoping I don't get ship wrecked here again, I give it a 5.

The wifey got Tuna Salad Sandwich and said it was just OK. Go to Zeke's Kitchen and the Tuna Salad is WOW and for probably 1/2 the price.

If I was from the Oak Lawn area I would probably be giving this place an 8, but since I am from Mesquite, give it 5 and consider it a gift.

Posados - Restaurant Row in Mesquite

Luv me some Posados. In an attempt to review a different restaurant everyday it has been a while since I have been to Posados-Mesquite. Of course Chipper went with me.

The chips have a good taste but not extra ordinary, but there are very few that are extra ordinary. Give the chips a 7.

Posados has improved their salsa. This is the weak link. It use to be the salsa was a bowl of large tomato chunks. This didn't really appeal to my tastebuds. They are now blending the tomatoes with some spices and it has a better consitency and it has a better spicey taste. However, it needs a little more burn and spice. So giving the sauce a 5.

The service was on the spot every time. I like it when I don't have to wonder if my tea glass is going to be refilled. This Posados is consistently as good of service as you can get. It is amazing that they can be so consistent because this place has a different staff of waiters every time I go there and I usually go there once a week. Service gets a 9 tonight.

We ordered Chicken Fajitas. The Chicken is spiced up nice, and good quality chicken breast. The plate comes with sauteed onions and bell peppers. It also comes with a butter sauce that is unbelievably good. At least that is what Chipper says, because she won't let me have any of it.

They also come with cheese, sour cream, pico de gallo, and guacamole.

The fajitas get a 9.5 tonight.

At the end of the meal here comes free sopapilla's. Sopapillas are always great after you have loaded them with butter and honey. But they are extra tasty when they are free.

We skipped the free ice cream tonight.

Overall, Posados gets a 9 (see salsa).

till next time

Cooper Lake State Park

Mitcho's been hiding out at Cooper Lake State Park. Of course I don't have a connection for my Commodore 64 out in the boonies.

This review it totally not fair. The last few days, Mitcho has been the cook. So obviously all meals were a 10!!!

Two mornings I whipped up some of Mitcho's World Famous pancakes. I have my own personal recipe that it has taken me 37 years to develop. All I can say is everyone is my friend when I have the cooking grill going.

We also made hamburgers one night. These were really just ok. I have spoiled the whole campground with my home made french fries. I didn't make them this time and it just wasn't the same. Let me cook a bucket of french fries and those camping buddies turn into piranhas.

Saturday night we did the foil wrap cookin bag. You know we threw in hamburger meat, potatoes, onion, bell pepper and anything else we could find moving or not. They were lip smacking good.

Sunday night was chicken fajita night. One of the buddies had bought chicken fajita meat at the Mexican Meat store on Galloway just south of Hwy 80. Man was the chicken really good. Of course we loaded the fajita with many extras including Bud's homemade salsa.

If you know Mitcho, you know we went to Dairy Queen for Blizzards. One of the trips this time thanks to the grands I got two!!!

Buffalo Wild Wings - Bush & N Garland

This is the official hangout place for darlin's family. This place is a combination Sports Bar and Family restaurant. I am not sure how that works but in this place it actually does seem to work. So walking in, all 3 of the grands (two of em are 3) grab a tablet and get to work on the games. You know they have been here a few times when the 3 year olds can play the games on the tablet with little or no help. Of course being my grands, they are exceptionally smart, like all grands of rednecks.

We started the meal off with Fried Pickles. Now when I first heard of Fried Pickles, I was not too sure of this food offering. However, over time I have become a big fan of the Fried Pickle. These are breaded nicely, but their taste was pretty much just OK. Now if you want good Fried Pickles, Razzoo's is the best and Twisted Root is 2nd. Giving these a 5.5

We also had an order of fries to keep the piranhas of the family held off till the main thing came. The fries are small cut and very crispy. I liked the fries pretty good. They get a 7.

Then the wings arrived. Tonight we ordered traditional wings with Teriyaki, Mild, Medium, Spicy Garlic and Asian Zing Sauces.

The Mild sauce has just a basic wing flavor with no zing to it. I am sure you know that I like Spicy, so I could pass on these. However, the wifey is a no sauce or very mild sauce kind of girl. So we had ordered these mainly for her. The Mild gets a 4.5.

The Medium is the wing flavor with a little bit of zing. More zing, higher score, these get a 6.

The Teriyaki and Spicy Garlic had real nice flavor/taste. These bring some joy to the table. Givin' em a 7.

The Asian Zing had some Zing. As I was eating them, it didn't seem like the zing was much, however, after I finished eating each wing, the Zing grew and grew. Get me another glass of Coke please (by the way I mention Coke because I own stock in Coke. Buy more Coke!!!). Givin the Asian Zing a 7.5.

Service was there when we need it. They did a good job of taking care of us. 7.789.

The best part of this evening was the company and conversation. Except for that moment when little darlin' said my belly was fat. I could have gone all evening without that. Of course I love her anyway, she is very precious. The company gets an 8.5, but BWW does not get credit for this score.

Overall, tonight was a 7.5

BWW does everything right, so give em a try.

Chan's in Mesquite on Galloway down from Hobby Lobby

I was thinking there hasn't been any Chinese food in the mix lately. So it was time to slide over to Chan's. Probably my favorite Chinese food place in Mesquite. Of course I was accompanied by the wifey.

We ordered the Teriyaki (I have a hard time spelling Chinese words) Chicken. Upon ordering they advised us it takes 15 to 20 minutes to cook it. At least they are up front about the wait. As advertised, it took 15 to 20 minutes to get food. A lot of the time we order Sweet and Sour Chicken and it comes out in just a few minutes. If you are in a hurry you might want to try calling in ahead of time so that they can start cooking your Teriyaki (it's interesting, blogspot says I spell it wrong, but a Google search says I am right, so go figure) Chicken.

Note we only ordered one meal. That's because the portions are huge. When we got our chicken it was at least 1/2 of a chicken. It is all we can do to eat one order. The order also comes with a Teriyaki sauce and fried rice. As I have said before rice is rice.

The Teriyaki sauce is pretty strong. Just like Mitcho likes it. Giving the sauce a 7.5.

The chicken is basically a grilled chicken breast, but there is a lot of it. Giving the chicken a 7.

Chan's is a guaranteed pretty good meal. Give it a try.

By the way for my friends that are not rednecks, I have cleaned the chicken up. Normally I call it Yardbird. See when I was little, we would go to my grandparents and they had chickens running all around the yard. Mid-morning, my grandmother would go out in the yard and catch a chicken. Well you don't want to know the rest, but that is how I came up with the name Yardbird. You guys have just gotten too civilized.

Next time.

Food Trucks

Mitcho has heard of this growing following of Food Trucks. Mitcho has also from time to time associated with or around Community Life Church on Hwy 80 in Sunnyvale and on FM 1461 in Forney. AKA CLIFE!! So Mitcho swings by the church tonight in time to discover a real shindig going on. The food for this outrageous event was Food Trucks. Of course being a known food meister, there was nothing I could do but pull in and pig out.

The evening started at EasySliderTruck (www.easyslidertruck.com). Now for you lesser educated red necks, a slider is a smaller hamburger. You know the kind. When you are cooking out burgers, you eat 2 or 3 sliders while you are fixing the real 1/2 pounders. Mitcho knows sliders. So I ordered "The Roadside". Now Mitcho has always been a fan of The Roadkill Cafe. So The Roadside was a natural choice. This burger has meat (of course), cheddar cheese, BBQ sauce, Jalapeno, and of course Fried onion. Now Mitcho likes his burger well done and this burger was medium well, so I will give better directions next time, and there will be a next time. Man this thing was popping with flavor. All of the flavors on this slider was talking to me and I was tuned in. Mitcho gives the Slider an 8.57. Follow that truck.

Then going in order of the truck line up, the next truck was SSAHMBBQ (www. ssahmbbq.com). Now this is Korean food. I don't guess I have eaten much in the way of Korean food. So Mitcho ordered a Burrito. The burrito has meat (I chose Chicken), Jasmine Rice, Sesame Soy, Vinagrette salad, Cilantro, onion, Monterrey Jack Cheese, Cheddar Cheese, Korean Salsa Roja, and spicy mayo. The burrito was a large burrito, very spicy and very tasty. I have never had anything like it, but would eat another one tomorrow. Giving the burrito a 7.

This place also has Kimshee Fries. This is french fries, cheese and Kemshee sauce. First of all, what is a Korean doing with the French's fries? I'm just saying?? I only had a few of these but it had a very hot and spicy flavor that kind of had a sweet flavor also. Givin' it a 6.5.

Going on down the road, next was Cajuntailgaters (www.cajuntailgaters.com). Mitcho ordered Jambalaya. This was rice, beef and sausage rockin a cajun sauce. It had the real cajun flavor. Could have used a few beans to liven it up a little. However, it was pretty good. Mitcho's good friend KT had a bowl of gumbo from here. Reported that it was kind of OK. He also had the Crawfish Etouffee and reported that it was really good. Another associate DG reported that the Crawfish was very fresh. So good things here. Mitcho gives the Jambalaya a 6.75.

At this point, Mitcho had a serious problem. I had already eaten the equivalent of 3 meals and one truck to go. Also, I didn't mention earlier, but there was cupcakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes. So a strategic decision had to be made. Now truck number 4 was Gandolfos New York Deli (www.gandolfosdelidallas.com). This was deli sandwiches, which you can get on any corner, it's called Subway. So being that dinner was winding down due to being miserable, Mitcho went for the cupcakes. So I had a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting. Now this was great, pass me another one. The cupcake gets a 7.75.

My apologies to Gandolfo's, Mitcho will have to chase you down on a later date. So you still have something to look forward to.

All in all, this was good eats. Chase down a food truck and giver a try.

IN N OUT BURGERS- Rockwall

First of all they get a minus one because there is not one in Mesquite.

I have told you before that I have a hard time with the off the menu ordering. This place gets a minus 1 because of it's off menu policies. This place has a cult following in California. There apparently are blogs just to discuss this restaurant chain. Apparently on this blog you can learn about all of the off menu options. You apparently are not cool if you don't order off menu. Well I guess I am not cool. But then I never have been so that is no real problem for me. The menu in the restaurant is actually pretty limited. It does have what I want so it really isn't that big of a problem.

On this trip I ordered the single cheeseburger, fries and a drink. The wifey ordered a hamburger and a drink. The person also rung her up fries that she didn't want but we didn't realize it until we received our food. No real problem, we had Precious and Lil Bud with us and they ate most of her fries.

The cheeseburger actually was a pretty good burger. Most cheeseburgers have a little something yellow on the meat that is supposed to be cheese and typically I can't taste it. So normally I forgo the cheese. Why pay for something you can't tell is there. On this burger, the cheese was everywhere and tasted pretty good. So they get a bonus point (of course they need a bonus point). Also, the burger had a full slice of Onion' (said with a cajin accent). Now I am a big fan of the Onion' and the more onion it has the better I like it. This burger gets positive marks because of the onion slice. The meat had a basic hamburger taste, nothing special.  Burger King and Whataburger rule here in the chains category. I am usually a mustard kind of guy, but their burgers come with Thousand Island dressing, so I let the good times roll and tried the Thousand Island. This actually is a pretty good addition to the burger, I kind of liked it. Overall the burger gets a 6 after additions and subtractions.

I like the fries. They were thin cut, which is a plus in my book. They were also very crispy. Decent flavor. With the help of Precious and Lil' Bud we plowed through two orders of fries in a pretty short time. Fries get a 6.5 (I can't decide if they are a 6 or 7).

Overall a pretty decent dining experience for a fast food joint. They get a 6.5.

The next blog will cover Food Trucks, so get ready.

Pizza Getti - Lasagna Buckner Blvd between I-30 and John West

Yipper, this is the same Pizza Getti as I reviewed last week. As I said before there is only ONE Pizza Getti all the rest are wannabees. Home of the Best Pizza in the US/World and the Best Spaghetti I have ever eaten.

So I decided to try the Lasagna tonight. I have been eating in this place 45 years and I have never tried the Lasagna. That's because the pizza is so good that it is hard to not eat pizza. But I will sacrifice one meal for the sake of the blogger community.

The lasagna comes with a salad and they have a salad bar. After Little Darlin' patted me on the stomach and told me how fat I was, I decided to forgo the salad for waist line purposes. I have not paid much attention to the salad bar, because as I said, the food is awesome here. But you lightweights that need a salad to offset the good stuff, there is one.

Oh my, the lasagna looks different from any I have ever eaten, and I have eaten many, my waistline proves it. The sauce is the same sauce that is on the spaghetti and it is the absolute BEST. There is plenty of several kinds of cheese, so much so that you have to work a while to get to the noodles. But they are there. Great sauce, great cheese, like the pizza and spaghetti, it is the best I have ever eaten. Mitcho gives it a 9.75 just to keep you from thinking I am prejudice or something.

Also, the meal comes with a basket of garlic toast and it has a very good garlic flavor. Give the toast an 8.

The service was excellent as always and I saw a number of friends in the restaurant tonight. So service, fun and ambiance it gets an 8.

If you haven't been here you are robbing yourself. Stop stealing from yourself and get there. You won't regret it.

Till next time.

Tinos Mexican - Collins in Mesquite

First of all Tino's is run by a great family. They are good business people and Christians. Very friendly!
Tino's has been in business a long time. Years ago, their prices were considerably less than the rest and their food very spicy. They have had significant success over the years. I personally believe that they have to cook food in such large batches that it is impossible to retain the spicy flavors. These guys were the best. However, due to success, their food is not as great, it is good, but not great. Their prices are very similar to everyone else.

On this night we ordered Chicken fajitas, one of wifey's favorites. The chicken was good but not as spicy.
Chicken gets a 7.0
The setup items include sauteed onions and bell pepper, pico degallo, and guacamole. You have to pay extra to get cheese and sour cream. (NOTE: See Posado's, these guys give you cheese, sour cream, a butter sauce that is outstanding, sopapilla and ice cream for the same price with no extra charges.)
The setup gets a 5.0
As I have said before rice is rice.
The refried beans are basic refried beans, give it a 5.

The chips are pretty decent here so they get a 6.
The salsa is a good salsa, maybe the best thing here. I am giving the salsa a 7.5.

As I mentioned in my Zeke's Kitchen review, my friend ordered Chicken Quesadilla and they were pretty basic. I didn't eat any of them, but they get a 4 anyway. (See Zeke's Chicken Quesadilla.)

We have many friends that eat here and tonight we saw several friends of ours. The dining out experience is more fun when you get to see friends along the way. If you went everywhere I went, then I would always have at least one friend to visit with.

Service tonight was spotty. Some of it was we were visiting with friends, but still we like to have never ordered. The rest of the meal we had some service, but it was lacking at times. Tonight it gets a 4. This actually is not the norm here. Normally these guys do a good job of service, so give em one break here.

Overall Tino's gets a 6.

Mitcho loves Texas. If you are counting I have reviewed 6 Mexican restaurants at this point and I know of a number more that I eat in occasionally. There are many states in the US that don't have 6 good mexican restaurants. Go Texas!!!!

Zeke's Kitchen - Garland on Kingsley one block from Kingsley and Shiloh

This is a family owned restaurant. Me and wifey always prefer eating in family/locally owned restaurants instead of chains. Zeke is an uncle of one of the owners who made a positive impact on him as he grew up. I am kind of jealous here because I had 12 uncles, but none of them had anywhere near that kind of impact on me.

All around the restaurant are different bits of wisdom. They are very interesting. You need to eat here about 3 times just to read all of the items on the walls. Of course by the 3rd time you will be part of the family and will want to eat here from now on. I give it a 8.5 for ambiance. It makes a redneck proud.

Today I ordered the chicken Quesadilla. You get all 4 quarters of the Quesadilla, so it is a full basket of food. This is one of the best Quesadillas that I have had. It is of course loaded with fajita chicken that is spiced nicely, over flowing with cheese in every bite, then there are onions, bell peppers, hot peppers, and assorted pico de gallo. Man it is sure good. Tonight we had dinner with friends at a popular Mexican restaurant in Mesquite and my friend ordered Chicken Quesadilla. These had only chicken and tortilla that I could tell. Zeke's gets an 8.8, the local Mexican restaurant would not get over a 4.

The wifey had a late brunch today so she didn't eat lunch, but in the past she has had the Chicken salad and she says it was one of the best Chicken salads she has ever eaten. I have had the hamburger here and it is a top 10 burger also. I have had the chicken pasta plate and it was very good also. Bottom line is, these folks know how to cook and make food tasty. My kind of folk.

By the way this is one of those off menu restaurants. If you are wanting something and it is not on the menu, if they can come up with the ingredients, you'll get it. Of course being a bean counter, I live in a black and white world so I have a hard time off the menu, but you might want to try it. They need a good challenge.

I give Zeke's an 8.9. Get yourself to Garland and enjoy. You also want to Friend Zeke's Kitchen on Facebook so that you will get their Specials everyday. They have some very appetizing specials.

NOTE: Open only for lunch.

Casa Milagro Richardson - Campbell and Plano

Casa Milagro has been listed in the Top 10 Mexican Food in D Magazine. It also is across the street from where darlin works. So lunch with darlin winds up here about 90 percent of the time. So this is not my first trip.

This place is very busy, but I have never had to wait for a table. That's a plus. The service is friendly and on top of the game. It get's an 8.1

I ordered the Lunch Dos. Meat Taco, cheese enchilada, rice and beans.

First of all their chips are pretty good. We had Chipper with us, so you know we ate several bowls of chips. The chips get a 6.

The salsa in my opinion is the best of the Mexican Food places I eat in. It is very spicey and very consistent. I give it a 7.75.

The beef taco is man size. The shell is full of meat, with all of the fixin's covering the rest of the plate. The meat is spiced up nicely and there is more than you would ever want on a taco. So first things first, you have to rake some of the meat off of the taco so you have room for lettuce and cheese. The lettuce is very fresh. When you are done with the taco, you still have about 1/2 of the meat, lettuce and cheese to rake over the rice and beans for extra flavor. The taco get a solid 7.25.

The cheese enchilada is the basic cheese enchilada with good flavor and plenty of cheese sauce on top. 7.5 here.

The rice and beans are rice and beans. It starts at a 6. But after putting all of the taco leftovers on them, they are a 7 if I have ever seen one.

All in all, I give it a 7.5.

If you are ever marooned on the Richardson island for lunch, Casa Milagro is a nice choice.

till next time.

Souper Salad - Mesquite

What does a redneck do when he finds himself at an all you can eat salad bar?

Mitchos answer: Pile On

Little Wifey's answer: Post bail and get out of there.

The Wifey wins this one hands down.

Ok so the wifey thinks she has a pound she needs to lose, so it is salads for awhile. Yippee, just what a redneck wants.

I enjoy a salad almost as much as any other guy, and Souper Salad is one of my favorites mainly because of the variety of things you can put on that salad.

As usual, the lettuce is cut in large pieces and are mainly the bottom part of the head of lettuce, you know the thick white stuff you don't want to eat. So lettuce gets a 3, but thankfully we didn't come here for lettuce. Whew!

I pile on radish, onion, bell pepper, celery, cheese, etc. You don't get radish or celery in most places. So the pile ons get a 5.

Thousand Island dressing tonight, sometimes I go for Ranch and sometimes Honey Mustard. You know variety is the spice of life!

They always have 4 soup options, but there is only one that I really care for and that is the sausage, beans and rice. Now that soup rocks, but they only have it about once a month . NOT TONIGHT!! So no soup for me. They did have vegetable soup, which they have most of the time. I have never tried it, but it probably is decent, but it is not as good as sausage, beans and rice.

The also have a taco bar, but it never looks too appetizing, so I pass it on by.

At the end of the bar I land at the bread. I really like the ginderbread with lots of butter. This gets a 6.51. I also get a blueberry square which is not too bad. Give it a 5.

I top the evening off with a bowl of ice cream. Now this is not top 5 ice cream, but with enough sprinkles and caramel sauce, it isn't bad.

I did notice in the last month they have gone up $2.00 for two and don't have Pepperoni on the salad bar anymore. So they better be careful, more money for less decent options means Mitcho goes somewhere else.

Overall, I give the meal a 5.281.

Tomorrow I will be coming to you from the Cox Elementary Cafeteria in the Wylie ISD. Yum, Yum!

Till next time, Mitcho

Tastebud Temptations W Kearney in Mesquite

Happy Mothers Day to all of you. We wanted to do something special for my wifey's mother, so we took her to Tastebud Temptations. This is a catering service that only once or twice a year has restaurant service. This was a brunch buffet. All you can eat for $17.00 per person. We had high hopes for something special.

First of all, we had a 12:00 reservation that we had to wait until 12:20 to get a table.

We ate a number of their offerings, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, salad, mash potatoes, lasagna (which was very salty), rolls, broccoli and rice (no cheese), ham slices, chocolate cake, banana pudding, and several other items that were all OK. But our expectation was much higher than OK. Throughout the meal, a number of the items on the buffet were empty and it took a long time to be replenished.

The chicken wrapped in bacon and pigs in a blanket were good.

In reality the meal was probably a 6, but due to our high expectations, it gets a 4 and be happy with that! So there.

You won't be going there next week, because they only do restaurant service once or twice a year. But this time next year, go to Luby's, the food tastes better and if you get there at 11:45, you will have food long before 12:20.

Until next time.

The Koffee Kup, Hico, TX

Ok, it may be a little southwest of Dallas County. It was a beautiful day, so it was time to put the top down on the convertible and take a cruise. So we headed southwest to the big town of Hico. The Koffee Kup sells itself as a destination for motorcycle clubs. Several motorcycle magazines have written articles about The Koffee Kup as a destination. So I had to try it. First of all we arrived about 10:30 and there were a number of tables available. Of course when Mitcho walks in, a crowd forms. In the next 5 minutes all of the tables were full.

Since I don't eat eggs, the wifey had to provide the egg beat here. She ordered scrambled eggs. However, they came fried scramble eggs over easy. I have never seen any like this before. However, the wifey says she enjoyed them. Give em a 5.

I had biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were man sized and very tasty. Our biscuits were a little overdone. Of course I like my food overdone to charcoaled. So the biscuits get one bonus point for being overdone. The gravy was a decent cream gravy, of course once I splattered it with pepper and salt it was pretty good gravy. Give it a 5.

I also ordered hash browns. I couldn't believe it, the hash browns filled a pretty good size plate. You could have made a meal out of just the hash browns. I enjoyed the hash browns, but they were a little greasy. So it gets a 5.

We drove through the country on the way home and enjoyed the wildflowers and scenery.

All in all a pretty good excursion.

El Fenix Downtown Dallas

Corner of Woodall Rodgers and Alamo (McKinney)

Chipper and me had some bidness to tend to in Downtown Dallas this evening. So after we finished our bidness we slid over to El Fenix Downtown. I think this is the original El Fenix. I have been eating in this location since the late 60's. Seeing how that's 45 years ago, I don't guess I can say I am 39 anymore huh.

First of all we plowed through 3 bowls of chips in a very short period of time. Their chips have a different texture to them from any other Mexican restaurant. They also have a good distinctive flavor. Giving the chips a 7.518.

As you know I want good salsa also. The El Fenix salsa is a true salsa, it looks like salsa and tastes like salsa. Giving it a 7.513.

Tonight I ordered the Taxco plate. One meat taco, guacamole tostada, one cheese taco and one cheese enchilada.

The meat taco is an oversized taco, with spicey meat, lettuce, and cheese. Plenty of meat in this taco!! Good flavor gets a 7.0.

The guacamole tostada is basically guacamole spread on a tostada. As served it is a 5. However, I put everything that fell out of my taco on it and that made it a 6.5.

The cheese taco is decent tasting cheese taco. You can get this taste even in bad Tex-Mex restaurants. It gets a 5.5.

The cheese enchilada had a chili sauce over it. Now I am not going to say that there was a lot of chili sauce, but I was 1/2 of the way through the enchilada before I was sure it was a cheese enchilada. The chili was spicy which gave the enchilada a good flavor. It's a 7 here.

The inside of this restaurant is very interesting. It looks like you are in a market in central Mexico, including murals everywhere. The ambiance gets a 7 here.

Service is always there when you need something. It's a 7.

I have fond memories of many meals here. The food and service are always good.

Get out your calendar and schedule a trip downtown you won't regret it.

The Pantry - McKinney on Louisiana 1 block east of the square

The Pantry is mainly a lunch place in McKinney. Their hours are 11:00 to 2:30 Monday to Friday and Thursday to Saturday 5:00 to 8:00.

This is basically your sandwich, soup and salad joint followed by FRESH PIES. It is in a building that is probably pushing 100 years old. I enjoy the table cloths on about 1/2 of the tables. These have newspaper advertisements from the 1850's. Today I got real interested in a wagon (you know pulled by two horses, sometimes with a cloth cover if you were rich) for sale for $58.95. I would bet $58.95 was a lot of money in 1850. However, it was a really cool looking wagon. But you can't eat it, so let's move on.

At lunch today, I ordered a cup of Chili, tea and Chocolate Cream Pie, wow.

The Chili was surprisingly spicy. It also had cheese on top. I was expecting a decent chili, but nothing special. However, I enjoyed the chili quite a bit. Give the chili a 7.

(The wifey ordered chicken tortilla soup and seemed to enjoy it also.)

Now the real skinney is the PIE. First of all, they have 8 or 9 choices of pie. Every piece of pie is a MAN size slice. You get a plate full of pie every time. I wanted about 4 or 5 slices of the different choices. My Chocolate Cream Pie was heavenly. Whipped cream, chocolate and a cream filling on the bottom. Yum Yum. The Pie gets an 8.75.

Mitcho says eat light in sandwiches and soup, then filler up on PIE.

NOTE: I also had dinner at Doe Belly's tonight, but tonights meal was identical to my last rating - 10!

Tomorrow will be about a restaurant downtown Dallas.

Joes Pizza and Pasta - Galloway and Tripp, next to Mardel & Hobby Lobby

Our CG from church met here tonight for food and fellowship. So I was part of a large group. I do eat here from time to time. The place is adequate. How do you mess up pasta?

The rolls they serve are decent. Give it a 5. I like the rolls at Eddie's Napolis or Olive Garden. Now Olive Garden does rolls.

The salad is a plate of fresh lettuce, 1/2 slice of tomato and one ring of an onion. This is a pretty basic salad. Give it a 5 and I am probably being generous here. I get the house dressing, which is pretty spicy and tasty. It gets a 6, it just needs to be on a better salad.

I ordered Lasagna and it was a pretty decent lasagna. It is a basic lasagna, hamburger meat (the meat does not have sauce in it (pretty plain), the sauce is above and below it), some cheese, noodles and limited sauce. It gets a 5.

Note: I make a homemade lasagna and mine gets a 7 if this gets a 5.

The service is good most of the time and gets a 6.

So overall this visit is a 5.518.

The fellowship was an 8.5. You know who you 1.5 are that didn't make it tonight!!!!

ONE ITEM TO PAY ATTENTION HERE: I have had one time where the waiter changed my tip after I had left on the receipt they turned in. Thus my credit card was charged for a higher amount. The difference was not enough to go back and fight over, but my tip is a little smaller when I am here to offset the potential of a problem later.

Pizza Getti on Buckner Blvd between I-30 and John West

Remember there are other Pizza Getti's, but they are not associated with the REAL Pizza Getti and no where near as good.

Ok I know that I just reviewed this restaurant, but my review fired my kids up for SOME good pizza. Me and the wifey had snuck off on Saturday night without the kids. So they called and wanted to know if I would want to go, like there was a chance I would say NO. So of course I went. We had 10 of the 11 in the family, all hungry. We ordered 1 xtra large Canadian Bacon and Green Olives, and 3 larges (Pepperoni, Pepperoni and Green Olives and a Cheese-for the little ones).

It was scrumptous. I have to apologize to our daughter in law who couldn't make it, we ordered enough pizza so that some could be taken home to you, but it was sooo good and we were in a feeding frenzy and we ate it all. Piranhas have nothing on my family in the middle of a feeding frenzy!

Give all 4 pizzas a 10. It just doesn't get any better!!!!

They do have an all you can eat buffet at lunch Tuesday to Friday. This would be a good time to make up for your past transgressions.

Spring Creek BBQ Restaurant Row in Mesquite

Spring Creek is a chain with restaurants across the MetroMess. The BBQ is alway dependable. It won't ever be the best, but it is always good.

Me and the Wifey split a Beef and Sausage dinner.

The beef slices are tender and not overloaded with fat. Give it a 6.758
The sausage we selected was pepper sausage. It has a good quantity of pepper so that you can taste the pepper in every bite. I am a big spicy/pepper fan. So this meets my needs. I give the sausage a 7.05.
The beans have a good flavor and after I put some BBQ sauce on them, they were plenty spicy. Give the beans a 7.0.
The potato salad is good with a good variety of ingredients in it. However, did I not say I liked things spicy. This is a mayonnaise based potato salad. To get a high score it has to be mustard based. Give a 5.5.
The rolls are baked fresh on site and they are very yummy. Grab plenty of butter as you go through the line as you will want to eat a number of rolls. Forget that diet for about 15 minutes. Give the rolls a 7.5. The best food item here.

Saw several good friends here tonight which always makes dining a little more fun.

NOTE: On Sundays you get a free scoop of Blue Bell Ice Cream. Now I am a big fan of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla.

Overall, this is a solid 7, you won't brag about it, but you won't regret going there either.

HINT: My top two BBQ places are Hutchins BBQ on Tennessee in McKinney and Rudy's. Their reviews are coming soon!

#1 Pizza Getti - On Buckner blvd between I-30 and John West Worlds Best Pizza bar none

First of all there are several Pizza Getti's on the East Side of Dallas. There is one in Rockwall at I-30 and Ridge and one on Hwy 78 around Nevada. BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE REAL PIZZA GETTI, all the rest are not related and are wannabee's.

I have been eating in this pizza place since September or October of 1968. I still love the same pizza that I started eating there 45 years ago. The owners are 2nd generation, but just as good cooks and just as friendly. Speaking of 2nd generation, this is the one place that I can tell my kids I am going to for dinner and both will drive 25 to 30 miles to eat dinner.

Hello to D Magazine and Texas Monthly if you think you cover the food places of Dallas and Texas and have never listed Pizza Getti, your listings are bogus at best!!!!!

Now for the real skinny:

Service is outstanding. You will start being a friend here on your first trip and after a few trips you will be family. You can't find that anywhere else. These guys are hard working trying to make sure you have what you need. Service gets a 9.5.

As for Pizza, it is the absolute best pizza in the world. Ok, I have only eaten pizza in the US and Mexico, but I don't think Cambodia or Ghana are the pizza capital of the world. Ok, some place in Italy might have a claim worth trying once, but why go to Italy when you have it right here in East Dallas. I have eaten pizza in probably 25 to 30 states in the US and I always look forward to coming back to Pizza Getti for GOOD PIZZA.

My personal favorite is the Deluxe Pizza. This pretty much has everything in the house on it. The tastes just explode in your mouth. This is one of those I bet you can't eat just one!!!!

I also am a big fan of the sausage, pepperoni, canadian bacon, etc. There are no bad pizza's here.

If you are not into pizza try the spaghetti. It is the best I have ever eaten. They also have lasagna, and I love lasagna, but the pizza and spaghetti are so good I have never gotten around to trying it. But I would bet money on it. If everything else is so great, I can promise the lasagna will be out of this world.

Last night we had the Deluxe pizza. It was awesome. It get's a 10 and as I mentioned in an earlier blog, I am only going to give 2 10's. I also give the sausage, pepperoni and canadian bacon pizza's a 10.

Closed on Sunday or Monday.

So right now start planning your trip for lunch or dinner on Tuesday, you won't regret it.

Posado's in Plano on 75 between Parker & Spring Creek SB service rd

Okay, this is just a wee bit north of EastDallasCounty. I can't eat all my meals around home. Grandson's basketball game took us to Plano last night. He scored a basket. A great shot from about 12 feet out. Way to go man.

I was also very shocked. If you read my last post about Posado's Mesquite, I have a long history with Posado's and it has been a very good one. Last night did not meet my expectations.

Once we were seated it wasn't too long before our waitress came to take drink orders and our dinner orders. We got to talking about the activities of the day, the basketball game, etc. and quite a bit of time went by. Finally after 10 to 15 minutes I realized that not only had we not received our drinks, we had never been served with chips and hot sauce. Now one of the main reasons you go to a Tex-Mex restaurant is chips and salsa. In our case my wifey eats one full basket by herself. I may start calling her chipper. Oh, maybe not. Anyway, the drinks, chips and salsa did not come until our food came. By the way we ordered 6 drinks, 4 of them were wrong. How do you do that???? Our waitress made excuses for the slowness of everyone else, but didn't address her short comings or actually not coming to serve us. Once we had our food, the service improved some, but it was already too late. We only ate one bowl of chips for 6 people, and remember chipper was with us.
Service gets a 2.5 and I am being generous.

We ordered chicken fajitas. Now I love some Posados chicken fajitas. They are very spicy, they come with sauted onions (and I am a fan of the ONION - said with a cajun accent), a butter sauce to die for (I hear it is unbelievably good, my wifey takes the butter sauce everytime and leaves me everything else), sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, and cheese (NOTE: At some Tex-Mex restaurants, the sour cream and cheese cost extra). The meal also comes with beans and rice. We always go for the charro beans. Man are they ever spiced up nicely.
Score 9 for chicken fajitas
7.5 for Charro beans
Rice is Rice
Tortillas gets a 7
salsa 6
butter sauce 9 or better
everything else 7.5..

At the end of the meal we had a sopapilla which are free at Posados. Man, put some butter and syrup on top and it is some good.

Our basketball star also got an ice cream cone to celebrate his basket. Ice cream cones are free also.

The food was Pasados quality, however, the service was pitiful. There won't be a future re-scoring because I won't be going back.

In this same area in Plano is also a Chuy's and El Fenix. Both pretty high on my Tex-Mex List.

Posado's - Restaurant Row in Mesquite

Love the Tex-Mex. You have to be in Texas to get goooood Tex-Mex. I basically eat Tex-Mex at 4 restaurants. Chuy's which I have already reviewed is #2. Posado's is the bomb, #1.

The food is always spiced nicely. It gets a 9 regardless of what you order.

Chips are pretty decent but not outstanding. It gets 7.

The salsa has improved over the last year or so, but it is still mainly tomato chunks with a little seasoning. Give it a  6 because everything else is so good.

Tortillas are very good and always fresh and hot. This is an 8 if I have seen one.

At the end of the meal you get a FREE sopapilla and Ice Cream cone. This is an 8.537.

Service is outstanding. You almost never wait on anything, they are there to take care of you. One of the servers told me that they average turning a table during busy times in 43 minutes and it is because how efficient their service is. They get a 9 here. The only knock I have is that the turnover on their staff is unbelievable. After going once a week for the last 3 or 4 years, we have only had the same server only 2 or 3 times, because they aren't there anymore. Otherwise, service would get a 10!

On this trip, I ordered the Dos Lunch special (your choice of two entres with rice and beans), which included one beef enchilada and one cheese enchilada, with Charro beans and rice. The beef enchilada was very tasty. You could taste the zing in the spices in the meat. The cheese enchilada is a very tasty cheese that leaves you wanting more. The chili sauce over the enchiladas is also very spicey. I would want a bowl of that chili in the winter time. Give the enchiladas an 8+

The Charro beans are also spiced up nicely and very tasty. This is a 7 and rates way over any refried beans.

Fried rice is fried rice. No point in rating it.

Many times we get the Chicken fajitas. My next review of this restaurant will surely be Chicken Fajitas.

NOTE: If you are ever in Tyler, Mercado's on the north side of the Loop is the mother ship of Posado's. This is where they train managers and franchisees. Try it out.

Until Next time.
