Lockhart BBQ/Emporium Pies - Bishop Arts District

The last few years our kiddos have been going to Bishop Arts District from time to time. So the wifey and me had a free Saturday and decided to mosey on down there and see What's Up. So we did the Acro dance to the Bishops Art District. First of all, if you go, take your parking place with you, because you ain't gonna find one down there. Actually Google search Bishop Arts District Parking and jot down all of the options, you are gonna need'em. The Arts District on the map looks like it is 7 blocks long and 4 blocks deep. Not really. Davis Ave is probably 4 blocks long, then Bishop drive is 4 blocks long and Madison is about 1 block. That's about it. Mainly the area are art shops and restaurants. The people buying the art are not in my pay grade. Wow, if two things are welded together, they cost at least $2,000. The next time one of our family buggies die, forget selling them to the junk yard, I am going to part them out as art. I saw one piece of art that was bearings, piston connecting rods, timing chain and various other motor parts, $2,000. In the last couple of years we have given away hundreds of thousands of dollars of worthless car parts, that could have been welded into modern art. Go figure.

Also, you better do some study of the restaurants in the area. Most of 'em cost more than a week's wage of work at my neighbors pig farm slopping pigs. I am talking white table cloth pricey. I am not sure I can afford driving through this area, but I know I can't afford to walk around.

One of the exceptions to the restaurant problem is Lockhart BBQ, Lockhart is part of Kreuz Market which main location is in Lockhart, Tx. Now a good redneck knows where all of the BBQ joints in Texas are and Lockhart has the motherlode. So we slithered into Lockhart's and the wifey ordered brisket and I ordered sausage. We didn't order sides because we already planned a visit to Emporium Pies later. So we found us a table and dove right in. This is some good que. Great flavor, some black pepper and a good tasting BBQ sauce. This is a good choice. The wifey highly recommends the brisket. I was going to get a bite or two, but it was gone before I could get there. Lockhart's is one place in this area that a certified redneck can feel at home.   Good fixin's rat here.

Afterward, we walked about 30 minutes until we had seen most of the area, so it was time to head to Emporium Pies. Now this is some mighty good pie rat here. So I ordered "Lord of the Pies". This is apple pie with caramel and cinnamon. Man this is one good pie. The crust is amazing and plenty of cinnamon. The wifey ordered the Smooth Operator which is a dream chocolate pie. she plowed through that thing with a vengeance. She had eaten a piece of this pie before and it is unbelievable. Emporium now has a 2nd location in Deep Ellum at 2708 Main St and a 3rd location on the square in McKinney. The Deep Ellum location is next door to Pecan Lodge, which is around the corner from Twisted Root, Adairs and Angry Dog. So you know we will be hitting this location regular.

One interesting thing about the Bishop Arts District is there are murals painted on the sides and backs of buildings in the area. These are very interesting.

So if you are bored and looking for something to do, drag yourself over to Oak Cliff and check out Bishop Arts District.

Stackhouse Burgers - Dallas near Baylor Hospital

Today we had some business at a Baylor facility near downtown that led to another Baylor facility. We had major lunch plans, but they got scrapped because of our sitting around doing nothing. We had missed the lunch hour, so I decided we needed to go somewhere close to where we were. We had a friend that had raved about Stackhouse, and we were close, so today was the day to do the Cotton-eyed Joe on over to Stackhouse. This place is a little over a block towards downtown Big D and on the other side of the road from Baylor on Gaston. This is yuppy territory. This whole area has been re-built into downtown condos. So needless to say, we had nuttin in common with the patrons.

We ventured in anyway. I can take it if they can and sometimes they can't. This is one of those places you have to slither up to the counter to order. So we settled for a single burger each and an order of onion rings.

The burger is a 6 oz burger or 3/8's pound for you mechanics. The meat patty had a nice flavor and it was covered with all of the usual suspects (lettuce, onion, pickles, etc.). The bun had been toasted on the grill which is always a good plus. So overall, this is a good.

The onion rings, not so much. At least the ones we had. These goomers were greasy and soggy. They obviously had sat around a while. If they were fresh, they would probably be pretty good. There was so many of them you  could feed all your kin folk with just one order.

Two burgers, onion rings, and 2 drinks, set us back $25.00. Now all burgers in Texas have to compete with Whataburger and for twice the price, I am choosing Whataburger. Of course near Baylor the eating options are limited. I did notice that across the street from Baylor they are building a new building and it does look like there will be several restaurants in the building, so progress.

Givem a 6.9526 (soggy onion rings just don't cut it).

Bubba's 33 PIzza - Mesquite

The last 4 days, wifey and me had to keep Double Digits, King L and Lil Darlin because Darlin and Sax Man went on a trip to Cancun. So you know I had to cram as much redneck wisdom into the kiddos as I could in such a short period of time. Lot's of time spent on whittlin, spittin, burping, passing gas, etc. You know all of the important functions of life. We got rave revues for our parenting skills. Of course being grand parents, we let them do whatever they wanted to do, eat whatever they wanted and sleep in any room in the house, besides all of the valuable training I gave them. So Darlin' said she and the kids wanted to buy us dinner to thank us for taking care of the grands.

So we did the Butterfly over to Bubba's. I have some avid readers of my informational blog that had recommended the Pizza at Bubba's. Of course Digits will eat pizza 3 meals a day for weeks, so I knew that a suggestion of us sharing a large pizza would be a sure bet. So we ordered a large pepperoni. Once again I am sacrificing my body for the benefit of my readers.

The crust is a thin crust which is a good. The cheese and sauce had a good flavor to them. Of course how can you mess up pepperoni? You just can't. However, like the Stromboli, the pizza was floating in grease. This pizza is way to similar to frozen pizza. You won't mistake this with Pizza Getti, that's for sure. I was very disappointed in the quality of the pizza. My amigo that had recommended it, has a good resume and has given good suggestions in the past. This one missed the mark. (I need to point out that this was a Monday night and Pizza Getti was closed!!!!)

So if you go to Bubba's, get a hamburger. I have now tried several things on the menu and the burger is the only thing to pass muster.

Note: A waitress recently changed my tip after I left the restaurant. I talked to a manager who did nothing. So I have the difference charged back to my credit card. Won't be going back.

Fuzzy's Taco - Mesquite

It is not very often that Skeeterville gets a new chain restaurant, but we have several new ones lately. Fuzzy's is one of em.

Tonight, the wifey had a ladies book club meeting. You know the kind, cheesecake, gossip and a book laying in their lap.

So I was left alone for dinner. Now that can be a dangerous thing. I can cause all kinds of havoc when not sufficiently supervised. So I did the La Conquista down to Fuzzy's Taco. It was just time to get my Fuzzy on. NOTE: Their entrance is on the side that has very little parking. The side were there is plenty of parking has no entrance. Didn't make much sense to me.

Their menu offerings are the basic Mexican fast food. So I decided to try 3 different tacos for my readers benefit. Both of you are very important to me.

So I ordered a  Shredded Chicken Taco, Shredded Brisket Taco, and a Special Ground Beef Taco. I opted for Crispy shells.

The beef about all 3 tacos are about the same, basic taco with no real enhanced spices. They don't have any salsa's to spice up the tacos. The only real addition is the gouda cheese which helped the flavor some. These tacos are ok, but that is it. But for Mitcho, these things need to be spicier. So if you want Tacos, go to Fuel City, their tacos are 50 cents each cheaper and have much more spicy flavor and they have fried pies!!! So back to the truck stop I go.

Razzoos - Mesquite Cat Fish

So the other night (I have been busy holding down the couch the last day or two), the wifey decided we needed to eat cat fish for dinner, but the weather was bad and she didn't want to drive to Forney to Doe Belly's. So she decided that we would try the cat fish at Razzoos. Now Razzoos is a Cajon kitchen. So we did the jitterbug to Razzoos.

When the waiter came to take our order, the wifey asked if the cat fish was cajon spicey. The waiter did not understand what she was asking. I mean this is a cajon restaurant. You would think he would speak cajon spicey!!!!! So we ordered the Fried Cat Platter and she requested it be spicey. Well that was a waste of time. When the food came, the catfish was just normal cat fish. If we had never eaten at Doe Belly's this fish probably would rate decently, but the stakes are much higher now that Doe Belly's is around. Not a drop of spice on the catfish. It was breaded nicely and had a decent flavor, but I want a Molotov cocktail in my mouth. Not going to happen here.

What's real interesting to this is the fries were spiced up nicely with a cajon spice and the hushpuppies were jalapeno hushpuppies. So why can't the fish be cajon spice?

Oh well, next time we want catfish we will drive to Forney and get the best. As for Razzoos we still enjoy the Andouille/Red Beanz N Rice, it is cajon spicey. And don't forget the fried pickles., these are the best we have had.

Givem a 7.2518 on the cat fish.

Bread Winners - North Park

So it is early January and it is about time to begin working the family still around the clock. So there isn't going to be much time for messing and gumming around Once work gets going I will eat a lot of Whataburger for 3 or 4 months. So I decided we needed to do something special tonight. I told the wifey that we were going to do the Fan Dance to North Park to eat at P F Changs. So the wifey immediately said she needed to go change clothes because North Park is high dollar. So I commented that I was already wearing my dress flannel shirt and I would put on my dress insulated flannel coat. They will serve me.

So off doing the Fan Dance to North Park. When we got there, we found a parking place only 3 or 4 rows over from the entrance. That just don't happen at NP.

So I walk in P F Changs in all of my redneck glory and the hostess immediately tells us that the wait is over an hour long. What she was really saying was "No Rednecks Allowed". Bummer, I am going to have to wear my disguise to be able to eat at Changs.

So now what do you do. We went down the hall to the map of NP. We reviewed all of the restaurant choices and the wifey finally decided we were going to Bread Whinners.

This is one of those places where you tolerate the entre to get to the dessert. So after studying the menu and not finding any valuable redneck grubb, I let the wifey choose. This place even tricks a hamburger up to the point you wouldn't realize it was a hamburger. The wifey chose House Meatloaf.

The meatloaf was surprisingly good. A very good tasting slab of meat. It was also served with Leek Mashed Potatoes. These taters were pretty good also.

Now came time for the real deal. The wifey wanted to know if I wanted to share or have my own dessert. I had shared the meatloaf, but not gonna share dessert. We both ordered Chocolate Seduction Cake. Wow this thing was trying to seduce me to a heart attack. Man it was really good and rich. Of course that is why I ordered it.

Overall, this was a good city slicker meal. Very tasty. I givem a 8.379
