Donna's Kitchen - Gus Thomasson in Mesquite

Tonight the wifey and I debated a number of places to do for dinner and couldn't come to an agreement, so we settled on a place I think neither one of us really wanted to go to. We have both eaten breakfast a number of times at Donna's Kitchen, but it is pretty hard to mess up biscuits and gravy. We have lived about a mile and a half from Donna's Kitchen and it has been in business for at least 20 years and neither one of us had ever eaten dinner there. We have eaten in every restaurant in the same shopping area, but not Donna's. So we did the Pachanga to Donna's.

First of all, Donna's is behind the 7-11, you can't see it from the street.

So we went in and started looking at the menu. They had meat loaf on special tonight and Mitcho is a meat loaf kind of guy. However, wifey informed me that we were sharing a dinner and we was ordering chicken fried steak. So we ordered cfs and I ordered pinto beans to go with my steak. The chicken fried steak just didn't look very good when it was brought to us. We suspect it is a not so good frozen steak. The crust wasn't too bad, but the steak was grizzly, had a weird consistency and didn't taste all of that good. Sure glad I came here for dinner tonight. The pinto beans were a basic pinto bean and tasted ok, Mitcho would prefer his beans to be a little more spicy. The corn bread that came with the meal was a little sweet and tasted pretty good. The corn bread was the best part of this meal. I also had a roll just to see what they tasted like. The roll was ok, but nothing special.

All in all, I won't be back for dinner. Call this a breakfast joint and leave it at that.

Black-Eyed Pea - Rockwall

Last week, Bud had a birthday and we celebrate birthdays in our family by going out to eat at the place the birthday boy/girl chooses. So Bud was in dire need of home cooking so he chose Black-Eyed Bean. This was an unusual time in that the full lineup was there tonight, which was great. The line-up included Mitcho, wifey (aka Chipper), Accounting Sax Man, Darlin, Bud, Lefty, CBoss, Lil' Darlin, Big Guy, Precious and last but definitely not least Lil' Bud. We forewarned the waiter that it would be loud and crazy. We weren't wrong. Every time the waiter came to take our order, bring us drinks or food, some of the people had switched seats. So he had a real guessing game, but did a great job. The Rockwall Black-Eyed Bean is no where near as busy as the Mesquite Black-Eyed Bean.

I ordered Chicken Fried Steak and beans and rice. Actually wifey ordered me to split the meal with her. We did order the Texas size Steak which was a big as a plate. The Chicken Fried Steak was very tender, had a good flavor and enough breading to make a redneck proud. The red beans and rice have a pretty good flavor. They really need to be a bit more spicey, but they were still good. This was some good fixin's right here. Topped off with very good service and great company, this was a great meal.

Texas Roadhouse - Garland - Bush Tollway

Today was Lil' Darlin and Big Guy's 4th birthday. So the birthday party was at Chuck Cheese in
Garland. As I pulled in, I noticed that Texas Roadhouse was next door. The birthday party included cardboard pizza and all of the kids seemed to enjoy it. However, with my redneck taste buds and my advanced age, I knew better. So from the beginning I was scheming to eat dinner at Texas Roadhouse. I can't tell you how much fun it was attempting to make all of the tokens disappear at Chuck Cheese to get the party over with.

So after the party the wifey and me did the Merengue over to Texas Roadhouse. Now the Texas Roadhouse in Mesquite is so busy it is almost impossible to get a table, but this one took about 5 minutes. The Roadhouse is famous for the free peanuts which they have positioned at the front door, on every table and all other places. Of course this redneck can't eat peanuts. I really enjoyed eating peanuts, till old age stuff struck.

So our waitress was prompt in taking our drink orders (tea). When she returned she took our dinner order. I ordered the Road Kill steak. Can't get any better than a redneck ordering road kill. This is a chopped steak with lots of onion (you know Mitcho luves his onion), solid coating of cheese and mushrooms. Mitcho is not a mushroom kind of guy, so hold the mushys. I ordered a salad and baked potato loaded. This is some good eats right here. Also, I almost left out the home baked rolls and the butter is honey-butter. This is a good meal from beginning to end.
