Route 66 Classic Diner-Rockwall

Today was Sunday, so the wifey and me was gathered up at the First Fried Chicken Eating Mostly Non-Denominational Somewhat Baptist Church for some free coffee and donuts. They even had some sanging and a young buck brought a moving message. Afterwards it is always mandatory to do Sunday lunch. You know momma wanted it that way. We have driven by the Route 66 Classic Diner many times and always wondered what it was like. Well now we know, we did the Baptist shuffle over there and slid in for some grub.

This place has about 8 parking places and probably 25 booths. They need to work on parking. We parked in the childcare place across the street. It was Sunday and no one was there. No harm no fowl.

The Diner is on Hwy 66, but not Route 66. I know because Route 66 goes from Oklahoma City to Amarillo and west from there (now mostly I-40). This joint is about 200 miles from the closest part of Route 66. You can't blame the owners from trying to associate the place with Route 66. I am sure our redneck nation has spent many hours traveling on Route 66 and causing all kinds of havoc.  I assume having Route 66 in the name says rednecks are welcome, which is not always the case.

A look at the menu reminds me of meals at home growing up. Liver & onions, Fried Chicken Livers and Gizzards, Salmon patties, chicken fried steak, burgers, Mexican food, seafood, etc. So pretty much anything in the American/Mexican food genre. They also serve breakfast all day. I will have to go back and try other entres.

Today I went for biscuits and gravy with hash browns. B & G is quality redneck breakfast food. Due to the skinny boy diet I am on, I now only eat healthy cereal breakfast. Boring. When I get a shot at a cooked breakfast, I just can't hep myself. The biscuits were probably good at 7:00 this morning, but a noon they were a little stale. I suspect the gravy had been sitting since 7:00 also. Even loaded with a healthy amount of pepper and salt, there still wasn't much flavor. The hash browns were very good.  The wifey ordered a chicken fried steak sandwich. The chicken fried steak had a homemade breading. It tasted good, but the breading was pretty thin. You know Mitcho likes lots of breading on his CFS. The wifey also reports that the steak had more grizzell than she would like. Otherwise it tasted good.

This is your basic downhome diner. Nothing especially good, but a decent shot of home cooking.

Trevino's Mexican Food - On the Square in Rockwall

My church which is part of the Fried Chicken Eating Mostly Non-Denominational somewhat Baptist Denomination was having a Baptism service in Rockwall tonight. One of the amazing things about our church is that about 1/2 of all of our Baptisms are adults. As you know, being religious makes me somewhat weird in the redneck world. A good redneck does say a little prayer to God hoping for some grace when the gate opens and he is on the back of Demon, the bucking bull. But I regress.

The service was at dinner time. Once it was over, chipper and me made a bee line for food. Mitcho does not miss meals and really tries to not be late either.

Chipper and me did the Big Apple to downtown Rockwall to Trevino's. We have a neighbor that is from Central Mexico and I believe this is where his family goes for Mexican food. They do advertise as authentic Mexican. The last time my neighbor brought me hot sauce it was so hot that after I mixed the small cup with a large jar of Pace Mild Picante sauce, it was still too hot to handle. So I was a little bit worried about how hot the food would be. After looking at the menu it looks basically like the normal Tex-Mex and Mitcho likes his Tex-Mex.

Chipper informed me that we were splitting combo fajitas tonight. Being the head of house I said "Yes Ma'am". We started with chips and salsa. Imagine that. The chips had a little better flavor than most Tex-Mex joints. So the chips were a good. The salsa seemed a little watered down and had only minimal flavor, but it did have an after burn. Overall chips good, salsa not bad. We are on a roll here.

The combo fajitas had more beef than chicken. The beef seemed to have a decent amount of spicey flavor, the chicken didn't have much flavor. They served the meal with plenty of bell peppers, onions, sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. The pinto beans had a pretty good flavor which puts them ahead of most. Service was good and the atmosphere was interesting. The fajitas were front porch quality.

Parking is always a concern if you are not on your horse, but Trevino's has a parking lot in back that probably has enough parking spaces. That is a real plus on the Rockwall square.

Overall this was a pretty good meal. Give'm a 8.165464321984

Bull's Pen - Sunnyvale, TX

This evening the Wifey and me had some bidness to tend to on the Service Rd of Hwy 80 just down the road from the Bull's Pen. After we successfully tended to our bidness it was dinner time. Over that way, there isn't much in the way of good food offerings. The best option is a Mexican restaurant and we have had Mexican the last two days in a row. For some reason that is a problem for the wifey. My theory is, if you can eat pork chops one night, roast the next and meatloaf the 3rd night, why can't you eat fajitas one night, enchiladas one night and burritos the 3rd night? Just saying. Off my soap box here!!!! The wifey decided we were going to the Bull's Pen for dinner. So being the smart guy I am, we did the Western Two Step on down the road to the Bull's Pen.

The Bull's Pen is run by a great family that actually raises bulls for rodeos. Their bulls are famous and are used in all of the most famous rodeos. They have a good bull bidness. You could say they are full of bull. My theory has always been that once the bulls get too old, then they become hamburger meat. That's what you call full cycle. I doubt that this is true, but is sure sounds good to an enterprising young redneck.

They also run two successful Mexican restaurants in the area.

As you know, once we were seated and given menus, the wifey notified me that we were splitting an entre. She decided we were having chicken fried steak, black-eyed beans, and fried okra. Now if that ain't Texas Redneck food, I don't know what is.

The chicken fried steak was breaded very nicely, had a good flavor, and the meat was tender and tasty. The black-eyed beans were your standard bean offering. Nothing outstanding but not bad either. I started to ask for some hot sauce, but decided not to. The hot sauce would have spiced things up a little bit. The okra was exactly like most restaurants okra. I am betting they are frozen and come from a food service. However, the same o, same o, are pretty good.

This was my first time to break bread for dinner here, but I have had breakfast here a number of times. Speaking of bread, a roll for each of us came with dinner and at was good enough to make this redneck want more.

Overall, this was a good meal. Why haven't I been eating here more?  If you figure out the answer, ring me up at the email address.

Orchids Bloom - El Fenix Downtown

Man I had worked hard this week. Several days I had worked 5 or 6 hours. It is Saturday night and I am in bad need of some party time. I figured the only right thing to do was to load the car up full of women and head out to the club. A young man out of our hood is pursuing a career in music and has had some successes in the life of bands. He currently is in Orchids Bloom. We had already made arrangements to go to the Jack Daniels Saloon at Gilley's Dallas to see Orchids Bloom. Of course the only refreshment we partook of was Diet Coke.

So I grabbed the wifey and her friends and off we did the Landler over to Gilley's Dallas. Blondie was going to perform on the main stage tonight and she has some weird followers. It was interesting walking in from the parking lot. I had dropped off the wifey and friends at the door, so they were already inside jamming to the music. When I got to the door the security lady asked me what I was doing there. Well, it is a saloon, I am thinking getting something to drink and listen to music. What did she think. Ok, she let me in.

We spent over an hour listening to Orchids Bloom perform. They perform a Bluesy, Folk, Rock Coffee House music. You figure it out. Very talented and someday will go places. We originally had planned on eating dinner here. However, their only offering was a hamburger and we were in Downtown  Dallas which has many good restaurants. So I informed the ladies that we would wait to eat until after the show. Like I had a say in any decision since they outnumbered me. You know they outnumber us guys even when it is one on one.

After the show we mingled with the band, the band's groupies, and Ralph Strangis (of Stars Hockey play by play who is their manager). But you can only mingle so long when you are hungry. I cut it short and we're heading to the parking lot.

We did some more Landler to the other side of Downtown Dallas to El Fenix. El Fenix is a downtown staple for many years. They also have a free parking lot. Mitcho likes free. We talked about getting Twisted at the Root, but it is on Commerce in Deep Ellum and even though in my earlier years I was ready to rumble not so much anymore. El Fenix looked pretty good. My girls on the way were asking would El Fenix still be open. I told them that without a doubt they would not close their doors until Mitcho has arrived. I really don't know what they do when I am not downtown, but that is not my worry.

The wifey and my doctor have conspired against me and have me on this here diet to lose weight. I can tell you eating is not as fun as it once was. So I ordered the Tenchita salad. This is your basic taco salad, meat, cheese, lettuce, fried shell. A trip to El Fenix also includes some of the best chips in North Texas and the salsa isn't bad either. The restaurant was full even at 9:30 at night. But this is Saturday night, so I imagine they do a good business way into the evening. I won't know because it is past my bedtime.

Overall got my party on, had some fun, listened to some good music, talked to some good people and ate some good Tex-Mex.

Giving Orchid Bloom an 8.4021974 on the Led Zeppelin/Lynard Skynard scale.

Giving El Fenix a 8.124891.

Bubba's 33 - Mesquite Cheese Fries

This afternoon the wifey and me gabbed uncontrollably about the Snuffers coming to Mesquite. You know Snuffers means CHEESE FRIES. Eventually the gabbing turned to Bubba's 33 which is our current upscale burger joint. So the most important question of the day was does Bubba's have CHEESE FRIES. So being the educated redneck I am, I Googled  Bubba's 33(in the old days this meant asking the older kids down at the creek) and checked their menu. Bingo, we don't have to wait till December to get CHEEESE FRIES. At that point the dinner decision was no decision at all. Tonight was Bubba's for CHEESE FRIES.

So the wifey and me did the The Mashed Potato to Bubba's for dinner. We ordered the Bubba's Bacon burger which has already been fully reported in this here blog. However, anytime you can marry Bacon to CHEESE FRIES, you have a winner. Of course we also ordered their Layered CHEESE FRIES. Of course at this point our job was to compare these to Snuffers CHEESE FRIES. Bubba's has several types of cheese, which I believe the cheddar at Snuffers is tastier. Then there is the bacon bits and chives (Mitcho likes all things onion). I think Snuffers puts a heavier coating of cheese, bacon and chives. Oh yeah, there is also fries. I do like Bubba's fries better than most places. Their fries are very thin and fried crisp. It's a good by them selves. Fries are a redneck staple where the criteria is, if they are good for you don't eat them. The serving also includes ranch dressing. We have had ranch at Bubba's before and it tasted like the normal ranch, which is good luving. But this concoction is not ranch. We asked our waiter about this issue and he reported that they mixed their own ranch out back. So the ranch is different everyday because a different employee makes it. The out back makes a redneck think thoughts about a trash can and a fine mixture.  But this concoction did not do it for me or the wifey.

Snuffers also has jalapeno's on the CHEESE FRIES. Mitcho luves his jalapeno's sweet pickles.

Bottom line Snuffer's is going to rule the CHEESE FRIES of Mesquite. Bubba's has a lot of good food and a great atmosphere, but they are going down where CHEESE FRIES  are concerned.

Givem a 7.8524186 Bacon on the burger, bacon in the burger, cheese fries with more bacon is not going to be a bad meal.

After dinner the wifey and me got in our ride and cruised the hood looking for the location of the new Snuffers. It was like old times cruising Buckner Blvd or White Rock Lake. After a few twist and turns, we found the new construction. It will be right in our backyard, so life will be extra good come December.

Here's a shout out to my new blog readers in Algeria. The blog goes out to about 40 countries.

NOTE: Recently a waiter here increased my tip after I left. I went and talked to a manager who did nothing. So I had the difference charged back to my credit card. Won't be going back.

Freddie's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers-Wylie

So the wifey had wandered up north to keep an eye on some of the grands. When Jazz Man came home they decided we would be eating together someplace half way. So they chose a place 5 miles North of where they were which if I am South makes me wonder about their calculation of half-way. Being the smart guy I am, I hopped in the old jalopy and took off for Plum Nelly (aka Wylie). I did the Mazurka all the way. Go figure they drive 5 miles and I drive 25 miles and I beat them by 15 minutes. they got lost and they are the ones that gave me directions, cause I had never heard of Freddie's. Of course my best friend back in my school boy years back in deep redneck country was named Freddie, so I was good with the choice.

So when Jazz Man, Double Digits (aka CBoss, aka Mr. Spinner) King L, Darlin and wifey showed up we sauntered in and studied the menu. I probably should have gone for the steakburger, however, for some reason the Chicago Dog caught my eye. So I stepped up to the bar and ordered me a Chicago Dog. The dog was a weiner, mustard, onion, relish sport pepper, celery salt and pickle served on a piece of Texas toast. This was a purt good dog. Of course Jazz Man showed up with his dog with chili on it. Now I am jealous. I liked the idea of Texas toast and overall it was a good dog. I didn't order fries, but I stole fries from all of the grands. Once I licked the fries, they didn't want them back for some reason. The fries were sliced very thin and fried crispy. I prefer thin fries fried crispy so this was a good. Of course the wifey has me on this seefood diet. I can see it, but I can't eat it, so no frozen custard this trip. I did notice others getting some dreamy looking goop that really made we want to get one. Oh well, next time.
