ROLLER FOOD - QT VS 7-11 INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW

Some of my known associates in crime like behavior have mentioned over the years a particular roller food at convenience stores that they liked. Now I have never eaten any roller food myself, but it does look similar to varmint on a stick cooked over the camp fire down by the creek. So I am not really that scared of roller food. I have passed by the roller food bar many times and they look inviting, but most of the time massive indigestion looks inviting before you eat it.

I wanted to put several things at rest, is it any good and whose is better. The wifey had one of them fancy luncheons to go to where they serve fancy vitals so I was turned loose on society with no one to keep me out of trouble. So roller food here I come.

I started out at QT. I would guess that their food is pretty consistent at most locations. The QT's in our area also have a small kitchen that you can order many different types of food besides what the roller food. I was there at noon. They have about 3 times more options than 7-11, but on my visit 2/3's of the roller food was still cooking and not ready. You would think that at Noon, they would have all options ready. Also, I went to what I consider the best 7-11 in Hungry Heights to give them a better chance.

At QT I chose a "Cheesy Pepper Jack Taquito" and a "Buffalo Chicken Bites with Cheese". I wasn't sure what the Cheesy Pepper Jack Taquito would be like. Any meat in it? Turns out it was basically Pepper Jack Cheese in a fried tortilla cover. It was pretty good. I could see myself eating one of these at a lunch stop. The Buffalo Chicken was mainly chicken with some cheese in it and a buffalo sauce on the fried tortilla. This was pretty good also.

At 7-11 I chose a "Taco & Cheese Taquito" and a "Jalapeno & Cream Cheese Taquito". The Taco & Cheese Taquito had taco meat that tasted very similar to Taco Bell and a decent amount of cheese. The Jalapeno & Cream Cheese Taquito was cream cheese with Jalapeno's in it. Yummy. These were pretty good also.

I am calling it a tie.  All four items were pretty good. I would consider any of these for a lunch. Sometimes I am in a hurry and go through the drive-thru at McDonalds only because you can get a cheeseburger and know that nothing will fall out of it into the seat or on me and mess up my dress T-Shirt. In the future I may be swinging by the Roller Food instead.

My therapist speaks highly of the egg rolls at QT, so that may be an option I will want to try next time. They were not ready today.

Givem both a 7.75

The Catch - Garland

Last week the wifey and me went to dinner with some long-time known associates and grabbed some Pizza at our favorite Pizza Getti. During conversation someone mentioned that they were interested in The Catch in Garland. They had heard about it, but hadn't been there. Well this got it in the wifey's head and she wasn't going to rest till we had tried it. So Saturday night I gave in to her (the couch was getting lumpy) and we did the fish tail to The Catch.

This is a small place in a strip shopping center just past Walmart at I-30 and Broadway. Basically this is a Long John Silvers plus. The people (probably the owners of record) were very nice. The place has not obtained a liquor license yet, so they are giving away free Margarita's. Now for most people this is a big plus and maybe what all the rumor mill is concentrating on. But for this tea totalier not so much.

We ordered a basket of fried fish. Fish, fries and hush puppies (I call'em shut up doggies). I was not impressed with the fish. It was ok, but not great. I have been to Doe Belly's and have had great fried fish. The hush puppies were pretty good and the fries were some of the best we have had. They get one atta boy for the fries.  Overall not overly impressed. See ya at Doe Belly's for some great cajun spiced fried catfish.

The wifey can't wait to go back, but agreed she would rather drive 30 minutes in traffic on Hwy 80 to geaux to Doe Belly's than the short drive to The Catch.

I will say again the people were so friendly I would let them hangout at the creek with me anytime.

Mi Tierra’s - San Antonio

Being a proper redneck after a hard day of catching crawdads in the creek or mud cat on the river we fry up the days catch, then sit on the back porch and play music. There was a day when maw and paw taught their youngins how to play, but today we send them off to school.

My oldest Grand has reached that age to learn to pitch some sounds in, so he is in the school band playing the trumpet. The band goes to these competitions to see who is the goodest. This week we have been in San Antonio for a state band contest. Unfortunately we didn’t pay the judges enough money or shine so we didn’t win it. But being in San Antonio you go to Mi Tierra’s for Mexican food.

We have been here many times in the past. The food has been good, the ambiance is incredible and it is in the Market. The Market always has interesting entertainment which we really enjoy. So I always say if you go to San Antonio you go to Mi Tierra’s.

Of course the wifey and me did the Mexican hat dance to Mi Tierra’s. First of all, the market was empty. I guess the corona with no lime scared all of the people off.

I ordered George’s plate. Beef taco, cheese enchilada, guacamole, rice and beans. The taco dripped a gallon of grease out the back end and the meat was not spiced at all.

The cheese enchilada was ok.

The guacamole was tasteless and the pepper I added didn’t have any flavor either.

Rice and beans were normal, nothing special. The chips seemed a little stale and the salsa has a funny taste, kind a like tomato soup.

Overall this was Oklahoma Mexican. Guess we will be finding another Mexican food place in San Antonio.

Giv’em a 6.5.

Rasing Cane's - Mesquite

About 6 months ago, Raisin Cane's opened a restaurant in Mesquite. Everyone has been raising cane about it ever since. For probably 4 to 5 of those 6 months it was drive-thru only and they had so many in the drive-thru that they were out in the road to. So somebody likes this place. We already have several chicken shacks in our rotation as it is, so it is not like we needed another one. Buy you know, when everybody goes there, you gotta try it.

So we spent most of the day messin and gummin around with CBoss, Lil' Darlin, and The mayor, you know giving em a hard time. After we shipped them off back to their parents, we decided the day had come to giver Cane's a whirl.

This place is about the simplest operation I have eaten in. They have chicken fingers, fries, toast, cole slaw and a sauce. Nothing else. At this simple you would think they are awesome at every turn. According to my sources  it is awesome. Maybe the quality varies from location to location.

I ordered the 3 finger box. This means 3 chicken fingers (I didn't know chickens had fingers?), fries, toast, sauce and a drink.

The batter/crust on the chicken was very good. Unfortunately my chicken was not cooked fully, so it left something to be desired.

The fries were your basic normal fries.

After hearing all raves about the sauce, I could barely taste it. What is all the fuss about. I choose bbq, honey mustard, hot sauce, etc. Something with a little zing.

The toast was ok, but it would be better if it was toasted on both sides. The bread is very think, and it was only very lightly toasted. I am a burn it then start cooking kind of guy.

Overall, not a great experience. I guess I will stay a Popeye's kind of guy, and have you tried their biscuits, sure beats the toast.

Givem a 7.0.

Alfonso's Italian - Casa Linda

I spent most of the day down at the crick, whittlin and fishin for mudcat. Life can't get any better. Along the way my good friend KD calls me on my smarter phone. Not that KD, but Arkansas KD that is a good guy. We talked about places to get our grub on and he mentioned that when he wandered into North Texas one step ahead of the law he laid low at Alfonso's. KD gave good marks to the rolls, salad, etc. He seemed very pleased with their fixins.

As you know I sacrifice my body for the benefit of my readers so I told the wifey that dinner would be at Alfonso's. She is a big fan of the fettucine alfredo so she only whacked me several times for telling her where we were eating. She is so good to me. We hopped into her jalopy and did the tango to Casa Linda.

This is a nice modern decorated place that has good service. I ordered Baked Lasagna which came with a salad and rolls. The rolls are garlic rolls and always very tasty. The salad was above average with a home made Italian dressing that wasn't over powering, it was just right. The lasagna is better than most. Not as greasy as many places lasagna is.

I have to admit when I talk about lasagna that my homemade lasagna is world famous and powerful good. The next is Pizza Getti lasagna which comes with garlic toast that I think I like better than garlic rolls. And I have to throw Olive Garden in there for their lasagna is 3rd, the salad is one of the best and the garlic rolls are to die for.

I want to thank KD for his suggestion. I am always open for suggestions of places to review. Just leave a comment and when I can figure out how to read it, we will get on over there to review it.

Petty's Steak and Catfish-Lindale, TX

Due to the Covid 19 (Corona with no Lyme) I have been trapped in the big city with intellectual types and other citified type folk. I have become concerned that my level of redneckism has diminished in the last year. It was time to do something about this dire emergency. So the wifey and myself loaded up and took off for the woods of East Texas to associate with well healed rednecks. You know the types, their cows are called Oreo's and they give chocolate milk. Can't get any better than that. The more time you spend up and down Hwy 80 to the east, the better off you will be.

As you know eating is a major past-time of mine. So twice a day we are forced to enter the world of citified people to grab some grub. In looking for a place, I discovered that Petty's has opened a feed alot in Lindale. Back when it was in Hawkins we would swing by in the afternoon for PIE. I don't remember ever eating any pre-dessert food, but boy do I remember the PIE. So I grabbed up the wifey and came out of the woods and headed for Lindale.

If you haven't figured it out yet, the wifey and me are true fishermen. We eat fish everywhere we can. So you guessed it, we ordered fired catfish for dinner. This meal came with two filets of fish, loaded potato, salad, rolls and hush puppies.

The fish is probably the second best we have had and we have been in all of the fish joints in East Texas. Go ahead and name'em, I have been there. The best is Doe Belly's in Forney bar none, but this is very close. I especially like the breading on the fish. It was not spicy like Doe Belly's but it was very very good. The salad was a very good salad, better than most. You wouldn't believe the baked potato. They gave us more fixin's than could possibly fit inside the potato. So needless to say, it was nicely doctored when I was done. Yum, Yum. The rolls were good but not outstanding and the hush puppies were a little lacking, but with all of the food I had in front of me, something wasn't gonna get ete anyway. Especially because pie was coming.

Did I mention PIE. These folks do pie. I opted for the Chocolate pie. I mean really tasty chocolate, great crust and meringue. Yummy, Yummy.

This meal was so good that two nights later we went back for a second helpin'. It took two days to be hungry again.
