Czech Stop -West, TX.

Several times a year, we rent a cabin for our kids and grandkids to come and hang out together. We normally go to Beavers Bend in Oklahoma for a long weekend in the fall. A month or two ago they opened the dam at Beavers Bend Lake, which flooded most of the Beaver's Bend area. So it may not be an option this fall. So I have been looking around for other options. I had found a couple of possibilities around Lake Whitney. So this afternoon we took off for Lake Whitney to mess N gum around and look at cabins. Here is why you do that. On the internet one of the cabins looked like it was off by itself on a pretty large piece of land. When we got there it was in the ghetto.

Of course the official rule is, if you are within 50 miles of West, TX, at any hour of the day, you are obligated to go to the Czech Stop and fill'er up. So we did the Marinu to the Czech Stop.

The Czech Stop is a Shell gas station with a Czeck bakery in it. This place turns out some smacking food. There are copycats nearby, but there is only one Czech Stop. Don't be fooled.

As normal, I went for Hot Chubbies with Cheese. I bought 5 of them (2 for tonight and 3 for lunch on Monday). The Hot Chubbie is a home made roll, that would be heavenly by itself. Then they put a hot link they made in the middle. Man this is some great tasting sausage with plenty of hot peppers. To top it off, it is also filled with a great tasting cheese. I have been eating these for over 20 years. I am looking forward to the next 20 years of eating Hot Chubbies.

The wifey got a ham and cheese and she has been eating these over 20 years and is sold.

To top the evening off, I also bought 3 cinnamon rolls (1 for tonight and 2 for breakfast Monday morning). This is the absolute best cinnamon roll I have ever eaten, bar none. I am talking about being loaded with a great frosting, but the real reason to get one is the cinnamon is thick and mixed with frosting throughout all of the rolls. Every bite is a little bit of heaven.

The last time I went to West, we drove there for dinner with no other reason to be 90 miles from home.

So figure out why you might want to get yourself to Waco, Lake Whitney, Hillsboro, etc  and while you are down there swing by the Czech Stop and get you a little piece of heaven for you. While you are there, you might as well buy me a half dozen Hot Chubbies with Cheese and a half dozen Cinnamon rolls.

Fireside Chicken & Tacos - Rockwall

A campin bud of ours called earlier in the week and he was excited about a new taco joint opened in Rockwall. He had eaten there and thought it was really good. So of course for my blog nation, I felt it necessary to try it out. So this afternoon the wifey called campin bud's wife and made the arrangements for a taco eating fest. We didn't realize that campin bud's daughter would also show up. Of course we have hung together so long that we look at daughter as one of our daughter's also, so it was nuttin but goood. (Don't you hate spell fixer when you are intentionally misspelling words and the computer keeps fixin it for you.)

So the wifey and me did the Ballet to Rockwall to Fireside Chicken & Tacos.

On your first trip you may need one of the employees to help you figure out what you want or you can just study my pictures and order 3 steak tacos. But we had friends with us who had been there so we had first class help. Of course if you feel like you need help I am always available to be your personal foody guide.

I ordered the #6 combo, which is 3 steak tacos and a drink.

When we got to the table they dropped off a basket of chips and salsa. Since Chipper was with us, you know the first basket of chips didn't last long, but they brought us a 2nd basket pretty fast. The chips were very different from all other chips. They were floating in grease. Actually they tasted real good (probably too good), but I won't be eating with my doctor here.

The salsa was the biggest disappointment of the night. The salsa was very runny and had minimal taste. It looked like salsa, but it needs work.

It did take a while for our dinner to be served, but that was ok, we had great conversation and chips and salsa.

The steak tacos has fajita steak meat that was very tasty. It also had plenty of onion, cilantro, lime and avocado slices. I could do without the avocado slices, they really didn't add much taste to the taco. The lime juice does add some zing to the meat. This is some good taco that was over filled with fixins. I had to eat fixins with a fork for a while before I could pick up the tortilla and eat it like a taco.

The wifey had ordered two chicken and one steak tacos and was not going to eat one of the chicken tacos. So I sacrificed my waste line for her. The chicken tacos are very unique. They had pineapple and red onions that seemed like they had been pickled. The chicken didn't have as much taste as the steak, but the fixins gave it an unsual taste, but was good.

Also, note the bottom picture above, my campin bud ordered a tilapia (fish) taco. It must have been pretty good because he inhaled it in a matter of a minute or two.

Overall, good food with good friends. You can't go wrong here.

Abuelitia's Mexican - Sulphur, OK

On Saturday night in Sulphur, OK the wifey aka Chipper wanted Mexican food. In the top 20 of Trip Advisor there were only two Mexican restaurants. So of course we decided to go the highest rated one which was Potrillos. So we did the Tinku to Potrillos. When we got there, only 3 cars were in the parking lot. We figured that was the chef, waitress and cashier. So basically at 6:30 on Saturday evening, no one was there. We had driven past Abueltia's and there were 20 cars in their parking lot. So we made the executive decision to go with the locals. So we turned around and did the whip to Abuelitia's.

After we were seated, the waitress brought chips, salsa and queso. So off the races for Chipper. The chips were pretty good, like most Mexican restaurants. The salsa was mainly tomato chunks, with a little bit of jalapeno. Now the queso, or whatever that was. It looked like a water down queso and was very runny. It had a slight cheese hint if you really looked for it. Needless to say, this is not a plus for the restaurant. My review would have scored higher points, if they didn't bother to bring out the queso type stuff.

I ordered a beef enchilada and cheese enchilada with rice and beans. The enchiladas were decent and the rice and beans were ok. So it was ok, but wouldn't stay in business in Mesquite. Of course when there is little or no competition, people have to eat somewhere.

SD Grill - Sulphur, OK

On Saturday morning it snowed about 5 inches in Sulphur, OK. So we cancelled our hiking. You just can't follow a hiking trail with 5 inches of snow on the ground. So we drove around town, went to the Ranger Station to get hiking maps, etc. While we were in town, it was lunch time. So we did the chula to the SD Grill. The SD Grill is basically a burger joint with a few other alternatives.

I ordered the James Dean burger (I think that was the name). This is a meat patty, pickles, onions, and bbq sauce. The meat had a good taste and the onions and pickles added to the experience. Now let's talk about the BBQ sauce. The mean came in a basket and the burger and the basket was floating in BBQ sauce. I have never been served a burger with half as much BBQ sauce. I surveyed all around the burger and could not find a corner that was not floating in BBQ sauce. So nothing to do but dive in. The good news is, this is some really good BBQ sauce. By the second bite I was up to me wrists on both hands and spots of BBQ sauce all over my face. At this point there is no need in cleaning up after a few bites because cleaning up is going to be almost impossible. So I ate the burger completely even before I got another drink of my tea. After I finished I used several napkins to do the basic cleanup, then I went to the bathroom to take the rest of the bath. But boy this was a good burger. It was worth the mess. If I am in Sulphur again, I am going to swing by SD's.

Boomerang Diner - Davis, OK

A feller can't work all of the time. So once in a while he has to get out of Dodge and chill for a day or two. So we rented a cabin in Sulphur, OK for the weekend and slid up there. This is small town Oklahoma and smaller town. You know you are in trouble for places to eat when McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Mayo, etc. are highly ranked restaurants. For Davis, OK the top 6 included a fried pie factory twice, the same BBQ joint twice, and a Mexican restaurant. That left Boomerand Diner.

So we did the diablada to Davis. The Boomerang Diner is a pretty small place that is decorated by old music posters, 45  vinyl's ect. So a plus for decorations. This is a pretty cute place. When we drove up, every table and booth were full except one. Now that is a good sign. This means everyone in town eats here. That is all it means, it doesn't mean it is that good.

It was Friday night and they were pushing their all you can eat fried fish, so we decided to go for the fish basket. Not the best choice. The basket came with 6 or 7 small pieces of fish, pinto beans, onion rings and hushpuppies (you could choose two items from a list of 7 or 8, of which I chose the pinto beans and onion rings).

You can go to Walmart frozen food section and buy better fried fish. Sorry, but this just didn't do it for me. The pinto beans were pretty bland. Mitcho likes some chili pepper, or other spices in the beans to give em some zing. Speaking of spices, on the table they had some Slap Your Momma Cajun seasoning, which actually added some good spice taste to the fish, which it needed badly. The onion rings were pretty good here. The hush puppies were also good. So all was not lost. The service was fast and attentive, so no worries there.

Overall, can't give em much. Ok 6.0 for trying.

Pie Five - Addison

So tonight was dinner night with darling and her gang. However, Sax man had to work tonight so he wanted us to slide over to Addison to eat there. Now Addison has a great shortage of red necks. So I had to put on my yuppie costume. Or they wouldn't let me in any of the restaurants.

So we did the Double Bugg over to Pie Five in Addison.

So we slid into Pie Five. Now no rednecks here. The is a happening, upscale, cool pizza joint. Their concept is pretty unique. Your Pizza is going to cost 6.98. You can take all of the ingredients they offer and make the pizza of your choice. So I went for a Five Star. Now this has pepperoni, sausage, beef, bell pepper, onion, black and green olives, and plenty of cheese. I added Jalapenos to the mix.
This was some pretty good pizza rat here. Now it is not as good as Pizza Getti and S-I-L felt bad about pulling us away from Pizza Getti, but we all have to work sometime.
