McDonalds - Mesquite (Because my grandson said so)

What a way to start the week. I had an 8am dentist appointment this morning. You know growing up redneck, we didn't brush our teeth. Now many years later I am paying a heavy price in pain and dollars for it.

So since I had not eaten breakfast, I figured I would grab something on the way home. I remembered that Double Digits (oldest grand) highly advises Sausage McGriddles at McDonalds. Now DD is influenced by many different sources (TV, dad, and even sometimes Poppy), so his food choices are not always the same as mine. But travelling with him this summer I had watched him eat several and they did look tasty.

I did the Skank to McDonalds. I decided to order a Sausage McGriddle for breakfast. This is essentially a sausage patty in between two pancakes soaked in syrup. So pretty good fixins. I enjoyed it and recommend you try one also. Now you won't find any other suggestions for McDonalds on this blog, other than their Apple pies. But this is the real deal. So grab you one and see.

Giv'em a 7.5 (it would be higher  but it is McDonalds)

Lumberyard Cafe - Edgewood

So the wifey took the family chariot to be inspected. So it failed because the Mitcho had used one of them highfaluting gizmos to mess with it's computer and the mechanic said it had to be driven farther to reset the computer gizmo. So she comes home and says we have to go a ways for lunch. No problem.

So I started thinking about where we could drive 100 miles round trip to. I remembered that some of our campin buds go to the Lumberyard Café in Edgewood occasionally. Now these folks know good food. If they go twice or more, it is pretty good. So we decided to do the computer reset boogy to Edgewood.

So down I 20 we go to Edgewood. Edgewood is a small town, the kind you would find full of my redneck brothers.

So we drove up to the café and it was pretty cute. When we went inside it has been fixed up country nice. So several good marks up front.

When you are in East Texas, you test a café by how good it's chicken fried steak is. The rest of their food doesn't matter. So you guessed it, we ordered the full size cfs. Of course as you know, we are splitting it. But in Texas two can split a cfs and both get really full. I also ordered pinto beans.

The chicken fried steak was pretty good. It's breading was near perfect, a real plus. The steak was better than most, so this is a good. The pinto beans had a good amount of ham in it and they tasted better than most. You know Mitcho likes his beans. The roll was pretty good also.

So overall, this was a good choice. So get your best gal and tell her it's date night and get yourselves down to Edgewood to the Lumberyard Café. You won't regret it.

Burger Street - Mesquite

We were in a hurry for lunch today because the wifey had some bidness to tend to. So she decided we were running to Taco Bueno for lunch. No this is not a review of Taco Bueno, even though maybe it should be. We went into the door, it smelled like a cesspool. Not real appetizing even for a redneck. Next she decided we would go across the road to Long John Silvers, but almost there she realized we were going to Doe Belly's tonight (fish). For some reason she has this idea that you can't eat fish for lunch and fish for dinner. So running out of time, we did the shuffle over to Burger Street. This place has been here forever, but this was our first visit.

At first glance on the menu, it is a little pricey for a fast food burger joint. You know us rednecks are tight with our money, you never know when a good used refrigerator will go on sale. So I ordered the normal, burger combo (burger, fries and drink). First of all they put mustard and mayo on their burgers. Come on, make your mind up, are you a sissy (mayo) or a real man (mustard). Don't be trying to walk a thin line in between because that line does not exist, it is a grand canyon in the middle. The next problem is the drink machine is behind the counter so you have to go back to the counter to get a refill. I strongly prefer getting my own refill instead of waiting in line again. Of course there was no one else there, so the line was not a real problem today.

The burger was large (Whataburger size) which is good, but my burger had one circle of onion and one or two pickles, plenty of lettuce. Come on, Mitcho likes onion. Whataburger loads their burger with lots of onion. The meat had a good taste and was plenty big. There was so little mustard on it that I had to look to be sure there was mustard on it. So basically there was not much to enhance the flavor of the burger. Mitcho likes enhancements. The curly fries were thin cut and crunchy, which Mitcho likes, but at their price they need to be seasoned fries also.

The one good item was the free ice cream.

This meal for me and the wifey cost $13.39, Whataburger for the same meal would be $8.50. I refer to Whataburger because they are the king of the fast food burger (sorry Burger Thing). Needless say, there will be no need to come back here.
