Capital Grille - Plano

Spring is coming to an end. The water in the creek has been very high for the last couple of months but it's finally receding some. Up until now there have been water moccasins everywhere and scorpions in the yard. It's like the food is just automatically coming to us. But with the water receding the moccasins are hard to find and the scorpions are back in the creek bed. So no more moccasin stew for dinner. Man hunting them was so much fun though. Life is going back to normal again.

The wifey decided she had eaten enough moccasin for awhile and determined I was taking her to some high falootin food. Being the smart man I am, all I said was "Yes ma'am". You know I am just entirely too good to her. So she has been listening to the high falootin folk we run into who talk about all of these fancy grub places. After considerable research she decides we are going to Capital Grille for dinner to celebrate. Now this is one of those places you can't just drive up in your jalopy and park it up on the curb. No, they have valet service so they park for you, for free. Yeah that's a joke.  Also, don't be showing up in your best overalls right after you have cleaned a mess of fish and your favorite muddy boots. This is high falootin, so Sunday go to Meetin clothes.

No card tables, paper plates, plastic forks. The real problem is there is a hardware store of knives, forks and spoons. Which one should I use. Also, everytime I use one they take it away. I don't really like this game. I don't want to get rid of my hardware until I am fully finished stuffing my face.

I order a wedge salad to start with bread. Now I guess it is a cool thing to just cut a head of lettuce in quarters and put a quarter on a plate and scatter some fancy dressing on it. But come on, take a few seconds and cut up the lettuce instead of giving me a hunting knife to cut it up. And if they knew how good I was with a huntin knife they wouldn't give me one. Of well, it was fun cutting up the lettuce. Now the bread is a different story. You would think in a fancy place the bread would be incredibly good. And you would be wrong. The first piece of bread had a strange spongy consistency and tasted like spoiled cheese. The next piece looked like a normal roll, except if I ever go back, I am taking my circular saw with me to cut the bread open. Man that was like a rock. I ate it anyway. The next piece was a dark brown and was decent, not real good, but decent.

When it came to entree's I didn't understand half of the things on the menu. The menu didn't have any real good fiood like mudcat or crawdad tails. After studying long and hard I settleed on the salmon. At least it is a fish product. The salmon was very tender and it came in a citrus glaze which added a little flavor, but at what it cost, I want it jump off the plate and make me go wow that was good. Not gonna happpen. It was ok though.

For the finish line I ordered a Warm Apple Tart. This was like apple cobbler with a scoop of ice cream. Finally some good fixins right here. Man this was so good and it was plenty big. I ate myself into oblivion.

At the end I called my banker and got a bank loan to pay the tab. We did the scuttlebutt out of there before they kicked us out.

Overall, it was a good meal. But considering the level of restaurant it was kind of disappointing. We have been to a number of these kind of places. The wifey keeps dragging me to them. And all of them have had better tasting food. It wasn't bad by any means, just not to level they think they are.

Papins - Belt Line in Sunnyvale

So after a hard day up in the crick fishing for mud cat and crawdaddin, the wifey informs me that just west of the crick is a new Mexican food establishment what we haven't tried. Apparently that was some sort of crime of which I was guilty of. So being the smart man I am we went to Papins for dinner.

When we drove up it was of some concern that no one else was there. That is not a good sign for a restaurant during dinner hours. But we barged on in anyway.

The waitress showed  up soon with chips and hot sauce. Now this can make or break a Mexican restaurant in the first few minutes. You know I have Chipper with me, so they better be good cause I got a true expert with me. First thing, there was not a salt shaker anywhere to be seen in the whole restaurant. How can you serve chips and not have any salt to liven up the flavor. That might be UnAmerican. Oh well, we still gonna eat the chips. The chips had a very nice crunch to them which I liked better than many other establishments of Mexican food. The chips had a little different taste which Chipper liked. That's good rat there. Now for the salsa, this is very important food. This salsa was bland in our opinion. I buy a Kroger brand salsa off the grocery store shelf that is much tastier than this. The salsa was a bust.

Since we always share a meal, Chipper ordered an enchilada plate with 3 enchiladas, salad, rice and charro beans. The salad was just lettuce with a few little tomatoe pieces to give it color. No points here. The rice was just rice. The charro beans had a different flavor to them which we couldn't identify. They were ok, but could have used some chili powder to liven them up. The beef enchiladas were a disappointment. The beef had a decent flavor, but the tortilla it was wrapped in was not good at all. Chipper ordered the ranchero sauce which turned out to be a reddish orange sauce that had no taste.

Overall, this would have a hard time competing with Oklahoma Mexican Restaurants and there is no good Mexican food outside of Texas. Pretty disappointing. We now know why no one else was there. The parking lot is a good judge of how good a restaurant is. If the parking lot is full and overflowing, loosen your belt because  you are about to grab some mighty good grub. But an empty parking lot is a warning that is being shouted at you.

O’Desi Aroma - McKinney (Indian)

So I was wandering on up to McKinney to hang out with a couple of kindred spirits. While up there I ran into an ole known associate who use to hide out at my church with me, The First Fried Chicken Eaten mostly Baptist somewhat Non-Denominational Church. We decided we needed some extended time to hash out old times. So we decided to grab some grub. Now my known associate apparently doesn't eat any American foods or anything from the creek, so we had to wander into this Indian food restaurant, Desi Aroma. This was my first experience in an Indian restaurant. I had a neighbor bring us some Indian Food down to the crick for us to try one time and it was ok. So I wasn't totally scared, but I had heard tales of curry.

I studied the menu a long time and googled a lot of things to see what I was willing to risk my life over. I finally settled on Korma, a rich cashew almond curry with mixed vegetables (think a thick soup/sauce) with chicken (you know Yardbird). Also, I ordered garlic naan.

So here I am risking my life, and all of sudden, hey this isn't too bad. Of course chicken is chicken. The Korma was very interesting a little spicy but a nice flavor. Hey I might do t his again sometime. The naan was basically a flatbed with oil and garlic on it. Now I could eat my weight in this stuff. So overall, I survived the indian food war with a win and a promise someday I will go do it again.

Of course when I was done my Texas drawl had a little Indian twang to it.
