Buc ee's Terrell

I am just going to come out and say it, I am entirely to good to the wifey. It was not even date night and here I am taking her to Buc ee's for a fine redneck dinner. It just doesn't get any better when you have to eat the meal in your car, because they don't have tables. This is the way it was in the 50's, except there was car hops back then. (Lookup what carhop means on Wikipedia.) When you get there, the first thing you need to do is walk from one end to the other, now you have had your exercise for the day. After 1 lap, I think I could live at Buc ee's and just slowly graze from isle to isle. It is probably open for 24 hours, so I would be welcome at all times. I will have to get back to you on that idea.

Trust me there is no shortage of options here for dinner. Of course most rednecks go hog wild over jerky and this is the capital of jerky. They also have a fudge counter that looks just amazing.

For dinner tonight, I went for the sausage kolache with pepper jack cheese. I also went for the cinnamon roll. The bread in the kolache was home made and was pretty good (not anywhere near as good as the Czech Stop). The sausage is very good. The pepper jack cheese had a good flavor but was not as hot and spicy as it should have been. The cinnamon roll was smothered with a cream cheese icing that was very sweet. The roll was pretty good. It looked like it was loaded with cinnamon, but the cinnamon wasn't all that tasty. However, I wouldn't turn one down. I topped the meal off with a Fanta Orange.

Overall, this is better than most gas station faire, but it basically is just ok.

Doe Belly's - Forney

The wifey informed me that tonight was catfish night. Now normally a good redneck would go out to his back yard and dig up a dozen or so worms. Then he would go to the channel below the dam and catch him some mudcat. Of course that means having to clean them, then getting all of the bones out, etc. etc. etc. I guess I have become citified because I don't want to fool with that mess. Of course I do enjoy catching fish, I just want to throw them back and go to a catfish joint to eat.

I have eaten catfish all over Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, etc. In all of that catfish eating, most of the places have been OK. That includes all of the famous East Texas catfish joints - Pine Mill, Miller Grove, Vaughan's, etc. There have been only a few that I considered really good. So when we talk about catfish, it is a short conversation, there is only Doe Belly's. Now Doe Belly's fish is spicy, I mean a very nice level of spicy.

So we did the catfish to Doe Belly's. We always order the 4 piece basket, which comes with 4 large pieces of catfish, fries, and hushpuppies. The catfish is the best I have ever eaten, bar none. The fries have a little spice on them and would probably be better than average if the fish wasn't so spicy. As it is, the fries are good but not special. The okra here is pretty good. I don't care for cold slaw much. The pinto beans are just plain. As good as the fish is here, you would think the pinto beans would be spiced up to my level of expectation. This meal is all about the catfish.

Grab you up some buddies and doo the catfish to Forney and get yourself some Belly's catfish. You won't regret it and you may become the new leader of your Krewe.

Ballard Street Cafe & Grill - Wylie

Late this afternoon, we had some impotent bidness in Sachse, which is just down the creek from Wylie. So after we completed our impotent bidness we decided we would go to Wylie for dinner. At first the wifey was threatening me with going to "The Taste of Home" in Wylie. Now there aren't any rednecks in good standing eating is this place. They are the white linen table cloth, fancified servers, etc. kind of place. So when the wifey adjusted it down to "The Ballard Street Café", I jumped on the idea. So we did the bolero to The Ballard Street Café & Grill.

The deco of this place is probably 50's, with lots of old pictures on the wall. The customers do resemble rednecks, but I am not sure. So I felt at home here.

The Café serves breakfast all day as well as dinner entres. So I went for the breakfast option. I don't get to see anything that resembles a real breakfast very often. So I ordered biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns and link sausage. The biscuits were cooked early this morning and were probably pretty good at breakfast time, but 9 or 10 hours later, they were pretty dried out. Of course the gravy helped some. I like to add a little salt and a lot of pepper to my biscuits and gravy, but the pepper shaker just didn't give much pepper up. So this part of the meal was not as spicy as I like. The hashbrowns were pretty good, but needed more pepper than I could get out of the shaker. The link sausage was pretty bland. So I added some Chef's Choice Hot Sauce to one of them and then pancake syrup to the other. With enough additives the link sausage wasn't too bad.

The wifey went for the chicken friend steak with green beans and okra. The chicken fried steak has a lot of grizzle in it, so not so good. The rest of her meal was ok.

So overall, this wasn't such a good dining experience. Of course there isn't much else in the way of restaurants in this area of Wylie.

Razoo's Mesquite - aka Fried Pickleville

It's dinner time again. What to do. After serious discussion, we (the wifey) decided we were going to Razoo's. You know Fried Pickles.

So we did the Cajun Jig to Razoo's.

You know you are a redneck, when you walk in and the hostess immediately asks if you want to go to the bar. Now this here member of the Fried Chicken Eating Baptist denomination don't drink anything stronger than Iced Tea. So no need in going to the bar, of course unless it is closer to the restroom (old age stinks). I think I am going to file a complaint about them there hostesses discriminating against redneck looking individuals.

We started our meal off with a basket of fried pickles. Now, I have eaten fried pickles in many a place, but these here are still the best, bar none. They are very spicy, good solid coating of crust and a great dipping sauce. Good start here.

We decided to split a helping of Andoulle /Red Beanz n Rice. We each get a plate full of beans, rice, Texas toast and 8" or 9" of a very spicy sausage.

Everything here is spicy, sausage, beans, etc. Hold on, I need to go get more antacid................I am back, better. The sausage has a good amount of spices. I am still tasting it 2 hours later. The red beans are doctored up nicely with plenty of spice. Of course rice is rice and you can't mess up Texas Toast. So overall, this is some good fixin's that you need to get in gear and go grab you some.

I can't wait till the next time I can be invited to the bar.

Heff's Burgers - Mesquite

Chipper and me were up in Mesquite about dinner time tonight at the Redneck store hangout (Wally World). You know it's good when looking at the Mesquite people is better entertainment than the shopping. No need in going to the circus now.

So Heff's burgers is new to town and has been the talk of the town for the last month or so. You know Mitcho has to hit the joint when everybody is talking about it. So we did the Bomba to Heff's.

I like how the place is decorated, old car pictures, old oil company signs, etc. Good start.

This is one of the places where the small burger is a 1/2 lb burger. Of course you know that Chipper had already decided we were sharing. So we ordered a Heff's burger with onion rings. When we split, I am a mustard and onions kind of guy and Chipper is mayo and not so much. So we ordered mayo and mustard on the side. I guess we should have pointed out that we didn't want either on the burger. So when the burger came, it had mayo on one bun and mustard on the other bun. Plus, they gave us Mayo and Mustard on the side. I am not sure how it was for Chipper, but I was able to add enough mustard to where I didn't even know the mayo was there. Score one for mustard.

On the table is Heff's special sauce. Well you know I have got to try the sauce. So I put some in the basket with the onion rings. I have decided this sauce is so special you have to know the secret code to taste it. Yeah, I am saying it has little or no taste. I guess that can be special. For me, not so much.

The burger had a good flavor and with the pickles, mustard, onion, lettuce, etc. it was a good burger.
The onion rings were a pretty good onion ring. So overall, this was a good meal.

I would be givem something near 8 for their rating, but I have to subtract points for the mayo/mustard thriller and the special sauce that had no taste. So tonight, 7.2519.

Richies Grill and Cafe - Hawkins, TX

It is Saturday and as you know, I recently lost a bad knife fight just north of Deep Ellum. So I am still recovering. So, I can't work in the yard, work on cars, or move my refrigerators around, like any good self-respecting red-neck.

So Chipper came in and said we should take a ride in the country in the convertible. That is why we bought it. So don't ask twice, let's boogy.

The only right thing to do is to trip on down to the Homeland of Rednecks, East Texas. Fortunately we only live a few blocks from the Mother Road of East Texas, Hwy 80. So we jumped on 80 East and got our Boogy on. Our plan was to drive until it was lunch time and then get our food groove on.
The weather was very pretty, temperature was perfect and not much traffic. So we had a real pleasant drive. We pulled into a gas station in Mineola because the Convert was low on gas. Now this must be the home of rednecks. You couldn't move around the store because of all of the one-liner gaming machines. So gas, cigarettes, beer and gaming machines. Glad I only need gas.

It was a little after 11:00, which is a little early for lunch, so we did the Mitcho Truckon (new dance)to Hawkins about 20 miles down the road. It was close enough to noon to eat, so we had to decide whether we wanted to eat in the one restaurant in Hawkins or go back to Mineola where there are two good hamburger joints (East Texas Burger Co. and Hutchins Hardware (Yes a burger joint inside a hardware store, how cool is that)). We decided to eat in the Hawkins place because it was new to us.

So we pulled in to Richies Grill and Café. This is where Petty's café used to be. I don't remember ever eating Petty's lunch food, but I went there a number of times for PIE. And I mean PIE!!! However, Petty's closed down 5 or 10 years ago. There is still a Petty's sign on the side of the building.

Inside Richies is nothing to speak of, it is the basic East Texas restaurant. Nothing special. The waitress led us to a booth and it was on.

First thing they did was bring us a basket of chips and salsa. (They do have Mexican food on the menu.) How cools is that. Stop to get a burger and get chips and salsa thrown in. The chips were your standard fare, but the salsa was very good. The salsa had a good supply of onion, cilantro and a number of other spices. It was very tasty.

The burger is a 1/2 lb burger, so you know it, Chipper had to SHARE a burger. (The picture above is my plate after the 60/40 split.) The burger was a very tasty patty, with the right veggies. Yum Yum. I really like the onion rings, they were breaded up almost perfectly. They also had a great taste.

Overall, this was a good lunch. It will be on our East Texas hit list for the future.

El Chico Rockwall - 1st Mexican food after a liquid diet.

So I was recently in a very bad knife fight just north of Deep Ellum. Woke up and found myself on a liquid diet. Now, for most Grove Rat rednecks, a liquid diet is a rather regular occurrence. However, their liquid diet included a significant amount of barley and hops. My liquid diet was more of the apple juice, Gatorade and jello version. It doesn't take long to be ready to eat some real food. I tried to get my hommy's to bring me a Pizza Getti Deluxe Pizza pureed, but I found that I have no real food smuggling friends. That's cool, I got my back.

So today we did the Azonto dance to Rockwall to keep a couple of our grands. After our duty was over it was time to get some food. Now I let my group pick their pleasure for tonight's meal, but I was constantly throwing in the good Mexican food joints. I finally helped them decide they wanted to go to El Chico. Of course Chipper likes their tortilla soup. So if we go there, I don't have to share. Always a good thing.

So after some unneeded discussion we did more Azonto to El Chico. Our group tonight was me (of course), Chipper, Bud, Big D, Precious and Hoss (welcome to the redneck family).

In the middle of the table was an advertisement for daily specials. Now I don't know if these are on-going or just for Cinco de Mayo, but I will be checking into that. The Tuesday special was Combination fajitia's for 2 for $14.99. Pretty good deal.

So we decided the 3 of us would share one of these. A(See 2nd paragraph above.)

The chips are the pretty normal chips, nothing special here. However, the salsa was real spicy and little hot tonight. That's a good.

The fajita's came with beef and chicken meat (thus the combination). The beef was really tasty. I am talking spiced up pretty nicely. The chicken had some spice taste, but not as spicy as the beef. Man that was a huge platter of meat. The 3 of us, ate all we could stand, and took a to go box home for a couple of more meals. That is a good deal.

I really liked their tortilla's. They had more of a homemade flavor than most Mexican restaurants. That's a good.

The rice and beans were the pretty normal.

Overall, after a liquid diet this was a really good meal. I bet I am not down 23 pounds now.
