Route 66 Classic Diner-Rockwall

Today was Sunday, so the wifey and me was gathered up at the First Fried Chicken Eating Mostly Non-Denominational Somewhat Baptist Church for some free coffee and donuts. They even had some sanging and a young buck brought a moving message. Afterwards it is always mandatory to do Sunday lunch. You know momma wanted it that way. We have driven by the Route 66 Classic Diner many times and always wondered what it was like. Well now we know, we did the Baptist shuffle over there and slid in for some grub.

This place has about 8 parking places and probably 25 booths. They need to work on parking. We parked in the childcare place across the street. It was Sunday and no one was there. No harm no fowl.

The Diner is on Hwy 66, but not Route 66. I know because Route 66 goes from Oklahoma City to Amarillo and west from there (now mostly I-40). This joint is about 200 miles from the closest part of Route 66. You can't blame the owners from trying to associate the place with Route 66. I am sure our redneck nation has spent many hours traveling on Route 66 and causing all kinds of havoc.  I assume having Route 66 in the name says rednecks are welcome, which is not always the case.

A look at the menu reminds me of meals at home growing up. Liver & onions, Fried Chicken Livers and Gizzards, Salmon patties, chicken fried steak, burgers, Mexican food, seafood, etc. So pretty much anything in the American/Mexican food genre. They also serve breakfast all day. I will have to go back and try other entres.

Today I went for biscuits and gravy with hash browns. B & G is quality redneck breakfast food. Due to the skinny boy diet I am on, I now only eat healthy cereal breakfast. Boring. When I get a shot at a cooked breakfast, I just can't hep myself. The biscuits were probably good at 7:00 this morning, but a noon they were a little stale. I suspect the gravy had been sitting since 7:00 also. Even loaded with a healthy amount of pepper and salt, there still wasn't much flavor. The hash browns were very good.  The wifey ordered a chicken fried steak sandwich. The chicken fried steak had a homemade breading. It tasted good, but the breading was pretty thin. You know Mitcho likes lots of breading on his CFS. The wifey also reports that the steak had more grizzell than she would like. Otherwise it tasted good.

This is your basic downhome diner. Nothing especially good, but a decent shot of home cooking.
