After a hard day of whittlin', judging a tobaccy spittin' contest and fishin for mudcat down at the crick, I had worked up a powerful hunger. So the wifey suggested we Sashay on over to The Porch Swing. The place is a down home cookin of fixins like grandma made. So we are very high on the possiblities. The menu of entrees actually is pretty limited, but then grandma only cooked a few items. Actually I only remember my dad's mom cooking fried chicken (aka Yardbird). Yea she would chase one down soon after we drug up and start the process for lunch. Since they are grandma like, I will cut them some slack.
Of course we ordered Chicken Fried Steak. If you are down home, you are Chicken Fried Steak. The breading was thick, crunchy and very tasty. However, the meat was a little tough. For $15 (all the entrees are about $15) I would expect a pretty decent piece of meat. They need some work here. I also ordered pinto beans. This is the other staple that is a must to be good. These are pretty good pinto beans, but they could use a little more spice. You know Mitcho likes spicy things. So next time bring some chili powder and throw it on top before you dive in. With a little chili powder, these would be top of the hill beans. The wifey also had the green beans and gave them a good report.
Now the real reason we were there (and everyone else that have heard the rumors down by the crick) is PIE!!!!!!!!! I have heard mention that this place has home made pies. So I was ok with splitting the CFS, but I want my own pie. One note, I think they have an apple option, but they need cherry, peach, or some other fruity option. So I went for the coconut cream pie. The topping, which I am guessing is whipped cream was very thin and crusty, but the cocunut cream filling was very very good. So over all the pie was a good.
This joint has been only open a few days. They need to review my blog and recipe suggestions and step it up just a bit. The inside is an interesting modern layout, but it does have porch swings out front. This will be good once it warms up. Also, I saw a number of other redneck types that I have served time with here, so the city (those that are not currently incarcerated) is checking it out. After a few weeks I guess the business will level off some.
Overall, it was good, but I would choose a fried pie at Fuel City over the pie, which leaves the rest suspect.
