Round Top Library Chili Cookoff - Round Top Texas

As all of you know I married way, way, way UP!!!!! I am not sure why a fine upstanding, highly educated, beautiful woman, with proper etiquette, grace and manners would ever marry a redneck from the creek, but a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally. I am one lucky blind squirrel. You also know if Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. So once in a while I have to come out of the crick, clean up a little bit and go do some classy activity with the wifey. I do have to say that I do have the wifey liking dirt track racing (Sprint Cars, etc.) so I have made some progress myself.

This weekend was one of those times where I sacrificed myself to give the wifey some classy fun. I made arrangements for a 3 day weekend shopping trip to Round Top, Texas. I have been told that Round Top is one amazing place two times a year. Round Top has a population of about 90. But in two weeks in April and two weeks in October (I think), the place becomes a Canton Texas on steroids. The main difference is that everything sold is high dollar. The rest of the year there are almost as many shops to shop in as there are residents. So even in January there is a lot to look at, handle, drop (then buy), etc. The wifey was in hog heaven. I even threw in a side trip to Columbus, Texas for additional shopping. Their advertisement indicated they had over 60 shops. After getting there, that 60 includes Walmart, Brookshires, hardware stores, Tractor Supply, etc. After eliminating all the places I would go in, there were 4 or 5 places to shop in. But that still made the wifey happy.

As we arrived in Round Top on Friday, the first sign I read was a sign for a Chili Cookoff on Saturday. Of course I was immediately on a mission to find out the details. This looks very promising. The wifey being the loving wife she is, also immediately said we needed to go to the cookoff on Saturday. You can't beat that girl. On Saturday, at lunch time, we did the dos e do over to the Stone Cellar where the cookoff was being held. There were more than 90 cars in the parking lot. This is a big deal. We paid $10.00 each for all the chili we could eat. They gonna lose some money here. It is my personal desire to make em pay. I am told I have been to one chili cookoff at my church years ago, but I don't remember anything about it, so for my memory sake, this was my first. I would guess there were 25 to 30 entrants. The entrants were businesses, junior class at the high school, chili cookoff teams, families, etc. We had to pick one entrant as the winner. This is much harder than you think and I will do it different next time. The first sample of chili we had was some powerful good chili. Very spicey!!!! Man we got a winner here and I hadn't tried any others. The wifey and I went to about 15 of the entrants then took a break and drank a Diet Coke and listened to some girl performing country and western songs. It looks like she might be famous down in those parts. After a brief rest, we resumed and went back and tried about 10 more entrants chili. Here is what I learned. After the first one, the rest were not as spicey (or at least it seemed). They were all pretty good. A little different here and there, but I would take any of them as a covered dish to the next church social. Finally I had to vote, but first I wanted to go back and retry the first one as I thought I should compare them after eating all the rest. It was just run of the mill chili. Here is a lesson for you, before you go to a chili cookoff, figure out how to cleanse your pallet between entrants. This way you will have a better chance to pick the best chili. I did go ahead and voted for Round Top Home Builders chili. To top the event off, one of the booths was also serving a cup of Blue Bell Ice Cream. So you know, I went and got me some ice cream for the road.

The cookoff had some good looking silent auction items available to bid on. I am sure this is a good fund raiser for the library and I am also sure they need the help. Overall, I really enjoyed the chili cookoff, the chili was great, the people very friendly and entertaining. Just a good ole time.

So if you are gonna have to take your gal to Round Top for some shopping go in the middle of January and checkout the chili cookoff.

Jersey Mike's - Plano

The wifey and me were over in Plano this afternoon for a basketball game that CBoss was playing. Being on two basketball teams at the same time, the kid is playing basketball all the time. But you know, he is a grand so we had to geaux. After the game, another convincing win and CBoss dropped about 10 points in the bucket, we needed to celebrate. So CBoss and his dad has recently developed a fascination with Jersey Mike's.

Also, I have a friend at The First Fried Chicken Eaten Mostly Non-Denominational somewhat Baptist Church in Rockwall that just raves about Jersey Mike's. He constantly says it is the bomb, the best place he likes to eat. And he told me this will eating a burger and cheese fries at Snuffers on my buck. Also, did I mention that RC has enough resume to get your attention when he talks about food. So I was agreeable with boogying down 75 to Jersey Mike's.

Upon arrival, we had to study the menu for a few minutes to figure out what we need to get. Of course we also had Lil' Darlin and The Mayor with us, and it is always a challenge to find something they will eat. After careful study, I went for the The Original Italian. I have some significant history with the Italian Sandwich. I have had em at Subway, Quiznos, Firehouse, among others. You know I sacrifice my body for my readers/followers.

One real point of favor for this place is they slice the meat in front of you once you have ordered. I would assume this would make the meat much more fresh than the other competition. You have several bread choices, several kinds of meat are piled on, then lettuce, tomatoes, onions, several kinds of sauce, spices etc. The sandwich looks yummy. So it came time to attack it. This is a pretty good sandwich. It did have a fresh taste. As for me and the wifey we decided that Firehouse still rules in our house, mainly because the sauce at Firehouse has a much stronger taste. I like strong taste. The Jersey Mike's is a good sandwich and I will find myself back here again.

Kearney's Feed Yard - Sunnyvale

Today was one of those great days where I spent the day out in the woods talking to the birds and wondering what is the meaning of life on Mars. Why do the Martians have it so good anyway? I bet they never caught crawdads in the crick.

After a hard day of doing nothing I gathered up the wifey to head off for some vitals. The wifey suggested we dance the jig to Kearney's Feed Yard. This place use to be a wholesome feed store with cattle feed, horse feed, medical supplies, hay, fishing gear and I could have sold my crawdad's here. However, those fine folks had small fire and nobody had any smores fixins. Burnt the place to the ground. After sometime it was rebuilt as Kearney's Feed Yard, one of the dress yourself up, fancy, high cotton places a good redneck doesn't want to be recognized in. But the wifey has been wanting to test them out and she rules.

A little advice if you go on Friday night, go early. They said the wait was 30 minutes, but it was longer. During our wait there were enough people go in to fill the place 3 times.

Being a redneck, we had to test their chicken fried steak. You know this and fried bologna are the true steaks. The wifey got a caesar salad and I got a fully loaded baked potato. This CFS was one of the best CFS's I have had in a long time. Hats off to the chef. The wifey reported good things about the salad so it must have been made recently and was not made by Caesar. The baked potato was fully loaded and real good. Top it with Texas toast and you got a humdinger of a meal.

So if you want to impress your missus or your sophisticated friends, gather them up and drag up on over to Kearney's Feed Yard. You won't regret it. Also, if you see anyone that looks like me, it wasn't me.
