Peach Cobbler Factory - Forney

There are a few foods I am passionate about. Kolache's at the Czech Stop in West, TX. Pizza at the Pizza Getti on Buckner in East Dallas. Catfish at Doe Belly's in Forney and The Fish Net at Lake DeGray in Arkansas. Pie at Piefalootin in Garland. Blizzards at Dairy Queen anywhere in Texas. Dukes Truck Stop along I-20 and I-30, they have Fried Pies.

I have always been a big fan of the peach cobbler but getting a good source has eluded me for years. So I am always on the lookout for a peach cobbler source that is a good crunchy and vibrant taste cobble. Trust me I have eaten a peach cobbler in every place that serves them in North Texas and have come up short until now.

The Peach Cobbler Factory has been open for a few months and I have been seeing posts on social media about it. Of course it was becoming necessary for me to give it a try. The wifey informed me we were going to a movie in Forney just a couple of blocks from The Peach Cobbler Factory. So I agreed to go with the understanding that dinner would be at The Peach Cobbler Factory. She's a peach.

We got there about 6:30 on a Saturday evening along with everyone else in Forney. This place was hopping. When you get inside the menu is a large advertising banner which is very easy to read, but very difficult to decide what to order. There are 12 different variations of cobbler, 12 variations of cheesecake, churros, ice cream, cookies and much more. My blood sugar went through the roof just walking in the door.  Of course for both of you readers I ordered the regular peach cobbler with ice cream. It is only right to go to the main thing. The wifey ordered chocolate chip cheesecake.

The wifey reports the cheesecake is very good. A little small but very good. As for the peach cobbler this is an above average peach cobbler. It is crunchy (I would want it to be a little more crunchy which kept it from being the best.). The cobbler is very flavorful and there are a number of peach slices in it. The serving is a little small for the price. The ice cream is vanilla ice cream with cinnamon on top. It is pretty good ice cream but not Blue Bell quality.

Overall this is very good fixins, but a little pricey. So it won't be a trip to Forney weekly but an occasional special treat. If you are craving peach cobbler, grab you up some friends and known associates and get yourself to Forney and give it a whirl.

Given it a 7.9254964

Dairy Palace - Canton If you are a true Texan you have either been there or you are on your way to there!!!!

So a known associate of mine has been informing me of sometime that my citizenship in the State of Texas is in question because I have never been to the Dairy Palace. So being a true Texan the only thing to do was to do the Miata Twist and head to Canton to the Dairy Palace. You see I am not giving up my Texas citizenship. Now Dairy Palace is definitely a redneck hideout. However, it would have a better position if it served fried bologna. Just saying.

When you walk in, you think you are just in a local fast food place. Wrong!! This food is legit.

The wifey ordered chicken fried steak with onion rings and a salad. Her meal also came with 2 large rolls and a big bowl of gravy. After the wifey had devoured the CFS and onion rings, she commented that this is the best chicken fried steak she has ever eaten. I told her a restaurant in East Texas worth anything has a chicken fried steak and they better be good. The food was so much she didn't touch the salad or rolls. We through our diet out the window on the way there.

My known associate has bragged for months about how good the grilled cheese with bacon is. Oh my, he wasn't kidding. Wow this is a really good grilled cheese. This may be the 2nd best I have ever had and that is saying something. I also ate a few of the wifey's onion rings and these things are about as good as I have ever had.

This has been a really nice start so far. But down to the real deal.

This place has 32 flavors of Blue Bell ice cream. If you are not familiar with Blue Bell Ice Cream, just know there is ice cream and then way up the good food chain is Blue Bell Ice Cream. This is the best. The wifey went for Triple Chocolate. I didn't get a report, but it disapeared rapidly. I got one dip of Sea Salt Caramel and one dip of chocolate chip cookie dough. This was Blue Bell good. I mean Gooooood.

We are already planning our next trip to the Dairy Palace, this was very good vittles.

Bob’s Steak and Chop House - Plano

49 trips around the sun ago I came out of the creek long enough to get me a wifey. I talked this high falootin, cultured and educated woman to agree to marry me. So you know I married way way up.

One of the few downsides is she wants a high falootin meal on valentines and anniversary. Furthermore she doesn’t consider fried bologna a high falootin meal.

So it’s that time again and she informed me I was taking her to Bob’s Steak and Chop House. Being a man of the world I said “yes ma’am”.

The wifey is a waggyuu steak eater deluxe. On the other hand I am fried bologna.

So I looked at the menu and this place had a foot long hotdog. You can’t beat that. Well you can, because they had been invaded by creek dwellers and was out of them. Can’t believe my luck.

The wifey ordered a waggyuu steak, mashed taters and stewed carrot.

After perusing the possibilities I chose a meatball. Yes one meatball and a salad.

The wifey loved her steak and raved about the mashed taters.

Now my meatball was pretty good size and it was drowning in an Italian marinara sauce that was yummy.

The salad had a good variety of weeds from the field.

When it came to dessert time I got serious. The wifey ordered carrot cake. At a fancy restaurant you don’t waste your one dessert on carrot cake. She did love it.

Now I am professional level at dessert. I ordered this sundae. I was expecting two dips of ice cream and hoping for 3 dips. Wow about 8 dips of ice cream on this mountain of heart attack. The best sundae I have ever had.

As you can imagine this was a top notch dinner followed by an over the top dessert.

Burgers and Fries Hwy 276 Royse City

Today is the USA’s 250 th birthday. To celebrate we moseyed over to Rockwall for their 4th of July parade. The parade starts off with a long line of crooked politicians. This parade had more USA flags than the entire Democratic Socialist Communist Party own. I loved seeing all of the flags.

Afterwords it was lunch time and there is no more American than burgers and fries. Some fellow Corsicana rednecks had highly recommended this place. It was only a short distance to it. 20 miles later I am not sure how long a short distance is.

This place is retro 50’s and very cute. They serve breakfast, hamburgers, sandwiches, and a few entrees. Today they also had a fried bologna sandwich. That is true redneck grub. AND PIE

I ordered a hamburger and onion rings. The burger was a good burger. The main positives were lots of mustard and onions. I am a big fan of mustard and onions.

The burger was a really good regular burger. The onion rings were oh my gosh. Huge and heavily battered. These are onion rings you drive across town for.

This is a cute place that takes you back in time and feeds you a good meal. Check it out.

Capital Grille - Plano

Spring is coming to an end. The water in the creek has been very high for the last couple of months but it's finally receding some. Up until now there have been water moccasins everywhere and scorpions in the yard. It's like the food is just automatically coming to us. But with the water receding the moccasins are hard to find and the scorpions are back in the creek bed. So no more moccasin stew for dinner. Man hunting them was so much fun though. Life is going back to normal again.

The wifey decided she had eaten enough moccasin for awhile and determined I was taking her to some high falootin food. Being the smart man I am, all I said was "Yes ma'am". You know I am just entirely too good to her. So she has been listening to the high falootin folk we run into who talk about all of these fancy grub places. After considerable research she decides we are going to Capital Grille for dinner to celebrate. Now this is one of those places you can't just drive up in your jalopy and park it up on the curb. No, they have valet service so they park for you, for free. Yeah that's a joke.  Also, don't be showing up in your best overalls right after you have cleaned a mess of fish and your favorite muddy boots. This is high falootin, so Sunday go to Meetin clothes.

No card tables, paper plates, plastic forks. The real problem is there is a hardware store of knives, forks and spoons. Which one should I use. Also, everytime I use one they take it away. I don't really like this game. I don't want to get rid of my hardware until I am fully finished stuffing my face.

I order a wedge salad to start with bread. Now I guess it is a cool thing to just cut a head of lettuce in quarters and put a quarter on a plate and scatter some fancy dressing on it. But come on, take a few seconds and cut up the lettuce instead of giving me a hunting knife to cut it up. And if they knew how good I was with a huntin knife they wouldn't give me one. Of well, it was fun cutting up the lettuce. Now the bread is a different story. You would think in a fancy place the bread would be incredibly good. And you would be wrong. The first piece of bread had a strange spongy consistency and tasted like spoiled cheese. The next piece looked like a normal roll, except if I ever go back, I am taking my circular saw with me to cut the bread open. Man that was like a rock. I ate it anyway. The next piece was a dark brown and was decent, not real good, but decent.

When it came to entree's I didn't understand half of the things on the menu. The menu didn't have any real good fiood like mudcat or crawdad tails. After studying long and hard I settleed on the salmon. At least it is a fish product. The salmon was very tender and it came in a citrus glaze which added a little flavor, but at what it cost, I want it jump off the plate and make me go wow that was good. Not gonna happpen. It was ok though.

For the finish line I ordered a Warm Apple Tart. This was like apple cobbler with a scoop of ice cream. Finally some good fixins right here. Man this was so good and it was plenty big. I ate myself into oblivion.

At the end I called my banker and got a bank loan to pay the tab. We did the scuttlebutt out of there before they kicked us out.

Overall, it was a good meal. But considering the level of restaurant it was kind of disappointing. We have been to a number of these kind of places. The wifey keeps dragging me to them. And all of them have had better tasting food. It wasn't bad by any means, just not to level they think they are.

Papins - Belt Line in Sunnyvale

So after a hard day up in the crick fishing for mud cat and crawdaddin, the wifey informs me that just west of the crick is a new Mexican food establishment what we haven't tried. Apparently that was some sort of crime of which I was guilty of. So being the smart man I am we went to Papins for dinner.

When we drove up it was of some concern that no one else was there. That is not a good sign for a restaurant during dinner hours. But we barged on in anyway.

The waitress showed  up soon with chips and hot sauce. Now this can make or break a Mexican restaurant in the first few minutes. You know I have Chipper with me, so they better be good cause I got a true expert with me. First thing, there was not a salt shaker anywhere to be seen in the whole restaurant. How can you serve chips and not have any salt to liven up the flavor. That might be UnAmerican. Oh well, we still gonna eat the chips. The chips had a very nice crunch to them which I liked better than many other establishments of Mexican food. The chips had a little different taste which Chipper liked. That's good rat there. Now for the salsa, this is very important food. This salsa was bland in our opinion. I buy a Kroger brand salsa off the grocery store shelf that is much tastier than this. The salsa was a bust.

Since we always share a meal, Chipper ordered an enchilada plate with 3 enchiladas, salad, rice and charro beans. The salad was just lettuce with a few little tomatoe pieces to give it color. No points here. The rice was just rice. The charro beans had a different flavor to them which we couldn't identify. They were ok, but could have used some chili powder to liven them up. The beef enchiladas were a disappointment. The beef had a decent flavor, but the tortilla it was wrapped in was not good at all. Chipper ordered the ranchero sauce which turned out to be a reddish orange sauce that had no taste.

Overall, this would have a hard time competing with Oklahoma Mexican Restaurants and there is no good Mexican food outside of Texas. Pretty disappointing. We now know why no one else was there. The parking lot is a good judge of how good a restaurant is. If the parking lot is full and overflowing, loosen your belt because  you are about to grab some mighty good grub. But an empty parking lot is a warning that is being shouted at you.

O’Desi Aroma - McKinney (Indian)

So I was wandering on up to McKinney to hang out with a couple of kindred spirits. While up there I ran into an ole known associate who use to hide out at my church with me, The First Fried Chicken Eaten mostly Baptist somewhat Non-Denominational Church. We decided we needed some extended time to hash out old times. So we decided to grab some grub. Now my known associate apparently doesn't eat any American foods or anything from the creek, so we had to wander into this Indian food restaurant, Desi Aroma. This was my first experience in an Indian restaurant. I had a neighbor bring us some Indian Food down to the crick for us to try one time and it was ok. So I wasn't totally scared, but I had heard tales of curry.

I studied the menu a long time and googled a lot of things to see what I was willing to risk my life over. I finally settled on Korma, a rich cashew almond curry with mixed vegetables (think a thick soup/sauce) with chicken (you know Yardbird). Also, I ordered garlic naan.

So here I am risking my life, and all of sudden, hey this isn't too bad. Of course chicken is chicken. The Korma was very interesting a little spicy but a nice flavor. Hey I might do t his again sometime. The naan was basically a flatbed with oil and garlic on it. Now I could eat my weight in this stuff. So overall, I survived the indian food war with a win and a promise someday I will go do it again.

Of course when I was done my Texas drawl had a little Indian twang to it.

Pluckers - Mesquite

Recently grandson number 1, CBoss, came in for a few days for advanced whittle and creek dwelling lessons. Gotta love the desire to learn and improve. Now CBoss is a big friend of the chicken wing or tender. Gotta be saucy though or forget it. So come time to strap on the feed bag, CBoss wanted to go to the new Pluckers in Mesquite. Since no is not in my vocabulary when it comes to grand kids we are off to Pluckers.

The first few months this place was open it was covered up with chicken eaten Skeeters/Stallions. However, finally the new has worn off and it is just a restaurant now. Mesquite was in bad need of another yardbird vendor. Like taco venders we have one on every corner.

We started off with fried pickles. Years ago I would have wondered why you want a fried pickle, but if it is battered and spiced nicely they are awesome. Pluckers are not. First of all they use a half a pickle spear. Fried pickles should be pickle slices heavely battered and very spicy. The batter here was ok and the spice was basic. The biggest problem here it is all pickle, limited batter and spice. If you need good fried pickles Razzoo's is the best. Buffalo Wild Wings are very good.  Don't bother with fried pickles at Pluckers.

I ordered the original buffalo flavor for my wings. The first thing I notice is what they call a wing, I call half a chicken. These things are huge. I prefer normal wing size which has more breading and flavor to the chicken ratio. These should be called yardbird breast not wings. The original buffalo flavor was disappointing. I have had this flavor in a number of wing shops in the area and this one is the least flavor I have had. This is how bad it is, Whatwings at Whataburger have a much better flavor. My wings (half chicken) had a good amount of grizzle. My knife couldn't cut the grizzle. So there goes a good amount of the wing (half chicken). You lose me at grizzle.

Overall, I don't see the point here. My drink was good. That is the best thing I had. So don't look for me at Pluckers in the future cause I won't be there. Come see me at Whataburger, love those Whatwings.

Lazy Dog - Firewheel

 Children

, you gotta have’em to get to the grand kids. No shortcuts here.

My oldest was flying in for a rave and expected to be picked up at the big bird yard.

Of course at the time the fish are going to start to bite. What do you do?

After consulting the wifey and evaluating the future she painted for me, I went to the big bird yard.

The good news is the oldest grandson was hiding out nearby and was hungry. So we started making valuable food plans. One thing I know for sure is CBoss knows good eats.

Of course he has a hankering for The Lazy Dog. I had notified the family months ago that I was boycotting The Lazy Dog because how can you have dog in your name and not serve a hot dog?  How does that happen???

But as I said CBoss wanted to go there and grand kids rule. So against my better judgement off we go.

As we are ordering CBoss advises me that the BBQ Ranch Bacon Cheese Burger may be the best burger he has ever eaten. Just reading the name makes me hungry. As I mentioned above CBoss knows food so I ordered the burger. Wow he may be right, this was a mighty good burger.

But the best is yet to come. I was advised that the Cajun fries were the best. I like everything Cajun. So I ordered a mess of them. Oh my gosh, these things are incredible. Best fries I have ever had.

Overall except for the two acres of land I had to sell to pay the bill this was a great meal. Of course it wasn’t my land I sold.

Cheesecake Factory

As Valentines was approaching the wifey informed me I was buying her her favorite candy. She got it off the shelf, took it to the register and indicated I was paying for it. Then she informs me I was taking her and my other wife to the Cheesecake Factory. You know I was out voted then. There was nothing I could do but gather the wives up and off we go.

You don’t go to the Cheesecake Factory for their entrees. They aren’t bad, but the star of the show is the cheesecake. Being on a diet and determined to eat my whole cheesecake I was looking for something lighter for entre. I found Chicken and Jalapeño Fritters. Chicken, green chilies, onions, sauce and some other stuff.

My first question is where is the jalapeños?

Question 2; where is the chicken. The fritters, green chilli and cheese sauce, onions etc were pretty good, but I didn’t find either one of the stars.

Of course afterwards I ordered a Snickers Cheesecake. Chocolate, caramel and whip cream, how can you go wrong. No take home box needed. This was some mighty good cheesecake.

The entree gets a hardy 6.111, but the cheesecake comes in at a solid 9.0.

Kolache Depot Bakery-Ennis

Down in the crick I was tending to important things when the word was that the Revenuers were in the crick looking for copper lines and kettles. I had no choice but to get out of Dodge for a few days. I grabbed up the wifey and we took off for Rockettown. We have some folk down there.

One of my strong points is that I like to eat. I am a really big fan of the Czech Stop in the town of West, TX on I-35. But I don’t have a Czech place on I-45 going south. I had heard Ennis was a Czech community so it was time to Czech it out. A search came up with the Kolache Depot Bakery right next to I-45. We roll in there about lunch time and plenty haungry.

This place had a display case similar to the Czech Stop. So I am in bidness. I ordered a sausage and jalapeño kolache, a sausage, jalapeño and cheese kolache and a cinnamon roll.

The sausage was pretty good but could have been spicer. The jalapeño was barely detectable. But the make it or break it in a kolache is the fresh baked bread. Had I not eaten at the Czech Stop for 40 years, I would not have known better, but the bread did not measure up. Don’t get me wrong the bread was pretty good, but not oh my kolache good. So I left somewhat disappointed.

When I dug into the cinnamon roll I found one thing that was ok. It was pretty close to the competition. Not enough cinnamon but it was as sweet as you would want.

I am still looking for a Czech place on I-45. If you know of one please call me at BR549.

Buc-ees - Beaver Nuggets

Recently, the Revenuers and Federales were crawling all over the creek. So it was time to get out of town for a few days. The wifey and I decided to head out to Houston to hang out with a grandson and lay low. Had some good time and good eats for a few days. After a couple of days we decided we ought to head back to the creek but should do it in the middle of night to avoid detection. We start out of Houston about 10:00 pm, first destination Buc-ees in Madisonville, TX. It is a given that if you are a Texan and your are traveling you stop at every Buc-ees.

One other item about Buc-ees I have not been so sure about. Some friends have informed me that is mandatory to buy Buc-ees Beaver Nuggets and other friends have said they are nasty don't bother. Now this is confusing. The only real way to sort this out is to get a bag of Beaver Nuggets and chomp on them. Since I needed snacks for the long trip home I bought a bag. Of course I also bought a few cookies and a cinnamon roll that is really really good. So I had options on the way home.

I busted the bag open and started chomping on them. My opinion is this is a weak copy of Cracker Jacks (remember those). Basically they are a little sweet air. Not much else. I can see their value, but there are better snacks in Buc-ees.

Whataburger - WhataWings

The wifey and myself went to Hungry Heights this morning to work on our home there. You know you can't have enough homes for when the revenuer or Federales are looking for you. While there, we worked like rented mules. That means we worked really really hard. When the sun peaked straight up like I like my coffee we determined it was time to grab some grub.

After a brief conversation the wifey decided we were going to Whatburger and I said "Yes Ma'am". So off the the orange building with white stripes.

When we got to the counter to order an add for the WhataWings came up. I have been seeing the adds in the store regular for awhile and had never tried them. But after working like a rented mule I could afford the extra calories so I went for it. They have 4 flavors, honey butter, honey barbeque, sweet and spicy and buffalo. I went for the sweet and spicy.

Whataburger is officially in the wing business. The chicken was near perfect, the breading was very good and the sweet and spicy was sweet and very spicy. These wings are just as good as the wings in the Wing Restaurants. If  you haven't tried them, you owe it to yourself to get on down to Whatburger and check out the WhataWings. Yum, Yum.

Crown Block on top of Reunion Tower

Today I was down at the creek, fishing for mud cat, catching crawdads, shooing water mocassins away, and having a high'o good time. Then I see the wifey coming down just a hollering at me. When she gets to me she grabs me by the ear and starts dragging me outta the crick saying some kind of nonsense about it being our 47th anniversary and we were going to celebrate. I thought I was celebrating, but I guess not. So she informs me we are going to eat high on the hog tonight. I got excited again, cause a hog produces some good vittles. Bacon, Ham, Bacon, Ham, pulled pork, etc. Come to find out she meant some fancy upity restaurant that is up in the sky. Of course we made it 47 years because occassionally I do what the wifey says.

So off we go. I am not going to say this place is high class, but when you get on the elevator to go to the top, there are NO BUTTONS TO PUSH. We get up to the top and they take us to a table with full table cloth, cloth lap napkin, more silverware than I know what to do with. The waiter comes and the first choice is filtered water, mineral water, flavored water, water bottles, etc. I started to ask if he had a water hose I could drink out of, but I didn't, you know this is a special occasion apparently. It's filtered water for me, no spiders please. Then he left for us to consider what we would want to drink. Are you kidding me, I am a southern crick dweller, is there anything else but ice tea?

He finally comes to take our order. The wifey orders an 8 oz filet mignon of Certified Black Angus. I didn't take a bite of her steak, but it was melting in her mouth and was so tasty she didn't want any sauce on it. Wow that must be good.Of course we are on a diet to watch our good looks instead of having them out in front of us, so no sides for the wifey.

As for myself, I have a problem processing steak, so I ordered the Rosewood Ranches Wagyu Burger with white cheddar cheese, red onion marmalade, truffle aioli and brioche bun. It also came with triple cooked fries which I ate one just to see how they tasted. The burger meat was just as good as that there filet mignon the wifey is drooling over. The other toppings had almost no taste, but it is because the meat was so good. The triple cooked fry was very crunchy, but it really needed some of Mitcho's homemade fry seasoning to make them real good.

Then came the main event. The wifey ordered Turtle Creek Peanut Butter Bar. This thing looked heavenly. I didn't really get a report on how good it was, but that was because the wifey was scarfing it down very fast. I ordered the Sam Houston Chocolate pie. This is a chocolate pie with whipped cream on top. If Sam Houston had some of this back in the day, he probably would have led the Texas troops past Mexico into Central America. Man, the chocolate in this pie was so rich I had a headache after eating it. Of course the whip cream was yummy and the pie crust was very good.

Overall, this was a very tasty meal. Of course it should be, I traded my horse and two cows to pay for it.

But seriously this was top of the line grub.

Givem a 8.925 (this wasn't Pizza Getti).

Black Bear Diner - Mesquite

Recently some long time known associates came down to the crick and grabbed me up and said they were taking me to Black Bear. I was sure we were hunting for Black Bear. What a rush. I was already figuring out how I was going to take a Black Bear down and have me some fresh meat for weeks. Never mind there are no Black Bear with hundreds of miles. Then I realized there was some new fandangled restaurant called Black Bear Diner.

I had heard tales about this place but had never experienced it myself. So I buckled in and let the good times roll.

This place is basically known for it's breakfast. As far as I am concerned breakfast begins and ends with biscuits and gravy. Plenty of salt and pepper. So I focus on the biscuits and gravy on the menu. 1200 calories!!!! Two biscuits and gravy has that many calories. I gotta see this. So I ordered the biscuits and gravy. Nothing else. Man 1200 calories is a lot for one meal when you are on a 1500 calorie a day diet.

My known associates ordered some kind of fancy breakfast that looked yummy when they came out. They raved about their meal.

Back to biscuits. When my meal came, the biscuits were the size of a horse apple (softball for the youngsters). I am talking huge. They were covered with plenty of gravy. The biscuits tasted better than most biscuits even if they were bigger than big. The gravy had a great flavor. This was some really good fixins. Next time I will take the wifey with me and have her eat one of the biscuits. There is at least two meals in this order.

So if get a hankering for biscuits and gravy and don't think you can get full, mosey on over to Black Bear Diner and order their biscuits and gravy. I am betting you are fried mud cat full before you finish what's on your plate.

Mo Bettas Hawaiian Style - Sachse

Word got to me that our CBoss (oldest grand) was playing in a Jazz band up in a club called Wylie East High School. Of course a r'neck loves good food and good music. So outta the creek I go and grab the wifey and head to the Wylie area. On the way we begin working out dinner (the third most important time of the day after breakfast and lunch). As always there is a lot of back and forth of we could go here or we could go there. Finally darlin' said why go betta when we could go to Mo Bettas. How can you argue with that logic.

They advertise this as a Hawaiian food establishment. NOT A PINNEAPPLE IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!

The food here is pretty simple, meat, rice or macaroni salad, and cabbage.

I ordered a two meat plate with Terriyaki chicken and Katsu chicken. Katsu chicken is a marked up way to say chicken strips. I got white rice, but you can get brown rice. Oh yeah and then there is that macaroni salad. I love macaroni, but their salad looked questionable to me. I passed. They had two sauces terriyaki and some kind of asian barbeque.

The Terriyaki chicken was very good. The Katsu chicken was pretty decent chicken strips. White rice is just white rice. The terriyaki sauce was fairly decent. I would have liked a little more zest. I never really figured out the asian barbeque sauce. It wasn't true barbecue but it had qute a zing at the end. I am a fan of the zing.

This is a very small restaurant with limited seating. There were six of us tonight sax man, darlin, The mayor, lil darlin' and wifey.

I question the Hawaiian with no pinneapple, but otherwise this was a pretty good meal. They also serve pig, steak and shrimp.

Rio Lerma - Forney

A few days ago, Chipper (aka Wifey) decided it was time to be civilized adults for an evening. If you have read many of my blogs you know that is quite a stretch for me. But I try when Chipper says I must.

As you can imagine it was a pre-planned attack which which included a 3 1/2 hour movie and dinner. So off we went to Film Alley. This is in Terrell across from Buc-EEs and all of you have been at that Buc-EEs. Yes you have, just own up to it. This is a pretty cool place with movie theatre, restaurant, and bowling alley. The movie has food service and very cushy reclining shares. I had a pretty good nap.

Finally the movie was over and off to dinner. I knew if I suggested a mexican restaurant Chipper would jump all over it with both feet. So I suggested Rio Lerma. Over the last few years we have been in meetings with folk from the Forney location of the First Fried Chicken Eating Somewhat Baptist Mostly Non-Denominational Church. All of these folk have constantly bragged about how great this restaurant is. Of course you have to take it with a grain of salt. These folk live in Forney. Just how many choices do they have or Rio Lerma serves some awesome adult beverages which doesn't appeal to me. Off we go.

The first course is always chips and salsa. This is a very important step in the process. They need awesome chips and tangy salsa to set the stage for the coming events. These chips were thicker than most which made them seem to be a little stale. They were OK, but no bragging here. The salsa was very different. I seemed to be a light green and orange, it's taste was very different. It had no heat, no real tangy taste, just kind of blah. Not a good start of the race to the finish.

I ordered a stack of cheese and beef enchiladas and rice and beans. The rice and beans were about the same as most other restaurants. Nothing special but they were ok. The enchiladas need work. The cheese was very different. Very similar with what I get in Oklahoma, Arkansas and New Mexico. This is not Tex-Mex as I know it. The beef was ok, but it had that goofy cheese on it. I am going to say New Mexico mex.

 The un-sweet tea was satisfactory.

Overall, this was disappointing. But as I say I have access to a broad base of Mexican restaurants, so my expectations are pretty high.

I am giving it a 7.0000001.

I know them Forney folk are going to go after me, but this is my opinion and my opinion alone. So far I have the freedom in the U.S. of free speech. Enjoy while we can, it is going away fast.

Zanata - Rockwall

The wifey informed me that I had to come up out of the crick and take off for dinner to celebrate another trip around the sun for one of her most favorite known associates. She is a sister from a different mister. We go a long way back with this girlie and went to church with her for many years till we changed to The First Fried Chicken Eating Mostly Non-Denominational somewhat Baptist Church.

Being her birthday, we let her pick her pleasure for dinner. The girlie has been a resident for quite a few years in Rockwall and has always wanted to check out Zanata. So she asked to go there. So on my way out of the crick I went by the First Left Bank of the Crick Bank and borrowed some money to bail us out at the end of the evening.

As we walk in, everyone is dressed up real nice and the place wreaks of oppulence. Not my normal kind of hangout. Then, a walk through the menu led to items that included toasted ciabatta, balsamic, artichokes, wild boar salami, soppressatta, pomtoms, gorgonzola and many other items that I just don't understand. So is this stuff meat or potatoes. That's the only two catagories I understand.

Being in despearation, I searched for something that I understood what it was. There it is, pepperoni pizza. Pay dirt.

The wifey ordered pepperoni pizza and supremo pizza. Good choices. She also ordered garlic bread.

The garlic bread came first and there were 3 large slices of bread doctored up pretty nicely. Good start.

Then the pizza came. This is some pretty good pizza. Both of them were keepers. Not as good as Pizza Getti on Buckner, but pretty good.

We had some good conversation, of course with two women, I didn't get a word in edgewise. That is until the bill came. At that point I was sure glad I had arranged the loan earlier.

Overall, this was a pretty good meal with good conversation.

Pie Five Pizza - Murphy

Chipper (the wifey) informed me that it was time to go to town and see the grands. So we left the peace and quiet of the crick and fought traffic like a prize fighter to Murphy, Tx. I took my honey (Chipper) to go have some honey on my Pizza. We met there Darlin, CBoss and The Mayor. You see if you buy the boys pizza they will eat with you. We have been to Pie Five a couple of times in the past and CBoss guides me in to what's good here. He's my pizza man.

With guidance from CBoss I ordered the Mike's Sticky Fingers. This has Mike's Hot Honey (sweet-heat combo of honey infused with chili peppers), premium curl pepperoni (so does the curl add flavor???, they have flat pepperoni and premium curled pepperoni. Beats me.), fresh basil, spicy marinara and house-shredded whole milk mozzarella. They aren't kidding when they say Sticky Fingers. You can't lick all of the honey off your hands. So like Cboss says, you just eat and be a mess, then when you are through you wash your hands, even if it is not Saturday night yet (I added this last part.).

Once you get your pizza you can add Magic Dust. Parmesan, romano, provolone, italian seasoning, and kosher salt. You can also have Magic Butter. I don't know what this does, but don't get a pizza without it. At least that is what I am told. So this place is kind of magical.

Overall, this is a pretty good pizza considering you are not in East Dallas and can't get to Pizza Getti.

Hot Rodz - Crandall, TX

When I come out of hiding, I hang out with this gang from my church, The First Fried Chicken Eating Mostly Non-Denominational Somewhat baptist Church. The gang is all excited about this girls high school basketball team in the state playoffs. So since I was out of hiding for a day or two the wifey decided we were going to see them play.

As you know that also was a good excuse to grab some grub. Crandall, TX today is being taken over by high falutin people in the last few years, but before that it was a high class redneck town. You know, my kind of folk. So you know there is some good redneck food in this place.

Before we went we searched for the menu for Hot Rodz and looked at pictures of their food. I had noticed red beans and sausage. When we get there it is not on the menu, but I notice a placard on one table (must be the redneck only table) that had the red beans and sausage on it. You can have my menu, my mind is made up. The meal also comes with corn bread. I am home, it just doesn't get any better!!!!

The corn bread was some the best corn bread I have had in a number of years. Man bring me another basket of these.

The red beans and sausage was as good as you can imagine. I didn't think about it till I was done, but I should have floated it in hot sauce. Man it would be so good you would just have to slap yo momma. Anyways it was very good. We just gonna have to come back here from time to time, basketball or no basketball. The folk I was with had a BLT and chicken fried steak sandwich and raved about them.
