Lakewood Cafe-Hwy 66 & Dalrock Rowlett

The wifey and me were holed up at the First Fried Chicken Eaten Mostly Non-Denominational Somewhat Baptist Church. As any good churchified person, as soon as Sunday go to meeting is over, it is time to rush to the restaurant and eat like there is no tomorrow. The wifey informed me that we were doing the gallop over to Lakewood Cafe. My East Dallas homey's would expect this cafe to be in the one and only Lakewood. If it really is at Hwy 66 and Dalrock, then the name should be Lakeview or Lakeside. Lakewood? Really?

We slid in and was seated immediately. After skating over the menu, I came to the conclusion that this is a breakfast, brunch and somewhat lunch joint. The pancake choices caught my attention immediately. They have blueberry, strawberry, banana, and a number of others. So when out waitress sauntered by, I ordered banana pancakes and bacon. I asked for my bacon to be burnt. A good redneck cooks his bacon with a blow torch, which the final result is always burnt. The waitress was the most accommodating regarding the burnt bacon. I think she really got it, but most don't.

The pancakes came with whipped cream on top with a number of banana slices. The pancakes themselves had banana slices throughout. The bacon, BURNT, just like I like it. This earned the waitress and extra dollar tip and an Atta Boy (I hope that didn't bother her, since she was not a boy!!!)

Overall, they done breakfast up good here. The wifey had a BLT (without the T) and thought it was very good also.

This looks like it may wind up in the lunch after Sunday go to meeting rotation.

La Joya Mexican-Downtown Wylie on Ballard

It's Friday and party night. Darlin' and Sax Man was going to party it up late. This means the wifey and me are agitating the grands. We always take the varmints to dinner when we are agitating them. The only food word these three know is pizza. Two days ago, the wifey let it be known that pizza was not in play tonight. After considerable  and sometimes heated discussion we settled on Mexican. Then we negotiated over all of the Tex-Mex joints in North Texas. I finally settled the issue by deciding on La Joya. I had never been here, but our Darlin' and Chipper had and gave it high marks. Chipper, CBoss, King L, Lil Darlin' and me did the Cha Cha to La Joya.

This is a very small locally owned restaurant, but they do a booming bidness. It is sparsely decorated, but I didn't 't come here to look at the walls. Everything here is reasonably priced, which is a very good thing.

We started off ordering drinks. The 3 kiddos aka varmints ordered Sprite in the bottle. I was surprised to see large real glass bottles. All sodas taste much better in a glass bottle. Chipper and me ordered tea.

After a few minutes, they brought chips and hot sauce. The few chips I got were thicker than most and the hot sauce was spiced up nicely. Of course when Chipper is with you, you are not going to get many chips.

I ordered the Mexican plate. Wow they thought I was haungry. The meal started with a very tasty taco which was in a thicker than normal shell. Then I went after the chalupa. Another rather thick tostada and very good. The cheese enchilada had a good tasting cheese and some good chili over it. Finally it was tamale time. Another very good tamale. The rice and beans were just normal rice and beans. Overall this was some good eats.

If you have a hankering for some bueno Mexican food and you are haungry, then grab up your gang and head out to La Joya, you won't regret it.

Hop Doddy - Preston Center North Dallas

This here redneck just doesn't like having to go to North Dallas. Those people who think they are rich, don't understand rednecks or our extreme value to life.I understand those rich folk, but they are not my cup of tea. However, once in a while, I have to infiltrate their territory to do a little bidness. Today I wasn't just real incognito (undercover), I had on two layers of flannel shirts. My outfit would fit in at the country cafe or Dairy Queen, but in North Dallas not so much. The bidness was no problem because they were taking my money. At least this time it wasn't the county sheriff.

After our bidness we did the Bolero over to Hop Doddy's Burger Bar.This is clearly a Millennial's hang out. The deco is nicer than my Dairy Queen and modern. I did notice that in all of their aloofness they do have a picture of Willie Nelson on the wall. Watch out, that opens the doors for us rednecks. The people were nice and didn't give me a stinky face.

Our overview of the menu reveals burgers with Turkey, Duck & Chicken patty, green beans, cranberry sauce, basil pesto, Chipotle Aioli (whatever that is), lamb, argula, and wasabi. You won't find this stuff at Whataburger. They did have a Classic Burger. They might as well call it the Mitcho Redneck burger. Meat, bun, onion, etc. So we chose the Classic Burger with cheese and bacon. You can never get enough bacon. They don't have fries, they have Kennebec Fries. Which must mean fries with some green stuff on them that don't taste.I can handle the fries. Finally we went to the drink machine. There isn't Coke, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi, etc. It is "Main Root" brands. We tried the Diet Coke (I have to watch my magnificent figure.). The Diet Coke tastes like watered down Diet Coke. Just get a Coke machine with some Dr. Pepper in it. Can you imagine a restaurant in Texas and no Dr. Pepper. I have some kin folk that would go to war over not having Dr. Pepper.

The burger had a good Angus patty. The other stuff was almost missing. There is some kind of secret sauce on it, but let's just say it was mayo. At Whataburger I get a heaping helpin of onions, mustard, etc. The fries were pretty decent but not just real special.

Overall, this was a pretty good meal, but nothing here would make me stop going to Whatburger. The meal for 1 burger, fries and two drinks was $18. I can eat at Whataburger several times on that amount.

Book Club Cafe-On the square in Rockwall

This morning we were up in the church, you know The First Fried Chicken Eating Mostly Non-Denominational somewhat Baptist church (Clife-Rockwall). After church of course the main thing is lunch. Our church is in Rockwall, so most of the time lunch happens in Rockwall, you know Burgers (Joe Willey's), Tacos & Burritos, enchiladas; the redneck staples. Approaching the square today the wifey pulled a dirty trick and said we were going to Book Club Café. Of course she waited to the last minute to keep me from thinking of a good reason to not go and not get in trouble. For this here redneck it takes a while to conjure up a good excuse that doesn't get me whopped with the skillet. We all know that the name Book Club Café means books and foo foo food. Not an ounce of grease in the house. I am pretty sure that books allowed in the place do not include Mad Magazine, Comic books, or Sports Illustrated (swim suit edition). I am expecting Great Expectations and all those other classics that I used Cliff Notes to get past in English. As for food, I am expecting La Madeleine faire, quiches, omelettes, etc. But I do want the wifey to be nice to me, so I took a hard left and did the jitterbug stroll to the Rockwall square. I did try the parking as an issue to save me, but wouldn't you know it, a spot right in front. All the rest were full, but I guess I only needed one.

As we go in, there are no books anywhere. Once we were seated we were told they made their own coffee, syrups, drinks, buns, pastries, and they had gluten free and vegan faire. I am excited, I didn't hear anything about jalapeno's, chili, hot sauce, onion, etc. This is going to be fun.

I was surprised. The first thing I see on the menu is burgers. They are expensive, house made buns with gluten free and vegan options. But they do have a burger. Then, next thing I see is Hot Dawgs!! Now we are getting somewhere.  The first dog I lock in on has onions, jalapeno's and pico. This is what I am talking about. The wifey looks farther and there is a dawg with sauerkraut, mustard and sweet relish. Sweet. No need to looking any further (they do have the omelette's also). The wifey orders a dawg with bacon. Sounds pretty good to me. I ordered the sauerkraut dawg with chips (Der Kommissar).

The home made bun was tasty, the weiner was a pretty standard weiner (maybe they should try a Johnsonville braut?????), mustard and loaded with sweet pickle relish. As for the sauerkraut, they need to get a new recipe. This was slightly doctored cabbage. Sauerkraut should have a strong sour punch, the stronger the better. That isn't happening here. The chips were a pretty standard chip.
Considering what I was expecting, this was a good lunch. Not the best dawg, but pretty good and it was not quiche.

Poor Mitcho's Cafe

The  Pastors of my church, The First Fried Chicken Eating Mostly Nondenominational Somewhat Baptist Church, have encouraged us to join them in a 14 day Fast. One of the Pastors is a family member, so we have to participate (we felt called to do it also). So for the next 14 days I won't be posting new blogs because I can't be showing that I been up in the restaurant during a time I am fasting. So I decided to finally share the best of the home front. For years, when I am home alone for a meal, I treat myself to a Poor Mitcho sandwich. Nobody else in my family will eat one. This is the only item on the menu at Poor Mitcho's Cafe. So review the ingredients below and make your own decision:

Slice of toast, toasted as dark as you can stand it. For me pretty dark.
Mustard, any sandwich of any kind has mustard on it.
Slice of Sharp Cheddar Cheese
2 slices of Fried Bologna (I am a redneck, what did you expect) of yeah, fry that Bologna real well (I prefer burnt)
2 strips of fried bacon, yes, well done
thick slice of onion (you know I like onion)
a heaping helping of jalapenos
a solid covering of pickles (keep the green layer going)
a thick covering of Peanut Butter (Oh yeah)
Slice of toast, toasted as dark as you can stand it. For me pretty dark.

Of course, if you have anything interesting changing colors in the refrigerator you could add them to the sandwich also. Sausage or pepperoni might be nice. Olives could enhance the green section. You get the idea. Now go make your own Poor Reader's sandwich with your enhancements. If you add anything good let me know.

Giving it a 10.0!!!!

Willie's Duck Diner

The wifey and me are off to Alabama to fellowship with some of God's country and with some local rednecks. In traveling to Alabama, I noticed we would be in West Monroe, La at lunch time. Willie's Duck Diner is run by Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty and Duck Commander. This is some good redneck folk rat here. These guys hunt, fish, rassle alligators, go muddin and tell TV executives that if they can't pray on TV they won't be on TV. Just doesn't get any better than these folks. This morning l put on my Duck Commander T-Shirt (dress shirt) and hat in anticipation of lunch.  We did the Duck waddle all the way to Louisiana.

This sure is a fine upstanding cafe to be run by such highly regarded rednecks. When we were seated we were treated with a large bowl of pork rines. I am not a real big fan of pork rines, but they are related to pig (bacon) and I guess Willie likes em so I had to eat a few. We ordered chicken fried steak, cheesy potatoes, salad and corn bread. The chicken fried steak tells us just how good rednecks this here batch is. Some pretty good ones in my book. The CFS was breaded heavily and the meat was tender and tasty just like I likem. The cheesy taters were a good mix of taters and cheese. Can't go wrong here. The cornbread was different, but tasty. The salad was one trip to the salad bar. The wifey made the salad bar run. When she came back she had piles of ranch dressing, lots of bacon (shes too good to me), and a hint of green stuff. A great salad.

All in all if you are in West Monroe at bean time, slide in here and support these fine God loving folks.

Latham Bakery - Downtown Forney

The wifey and me had some very important bidness to tend to in Terrell. We had a grandson that was in dire need of being spoiled. So we are off to Terrell. Our trip was around lunch time. This is a Monday and Doe Belly's and 4T BBQ are both closed in Forney. I searched Tripadvisor and the highest ranking restaurant in Terrell is Buccee's. 2nd is Hamms Orchard which is only open a few months each year. Eating in Terrell is not something you look forward to. We have a friend that had sung the praises of Latham Bakery. So this seemed like the right time to get over going there. I knew it was a foo foo place from the beginning. You might as well say it is a La Madeleine of Forney!!

When we arrived the employees game me the stinky face. They knew a redneck was infiltrating them and they weren't sure they should let me in. Fortunately my money is still green (the ink might be wet, but it is green), so they let me and the wifey in. The wifey is one of them.

The menu is foo foo food that women go berzerk over. For a redneck, not so much. They have no chili, jalapenos, tobasco sauce, cayeene pepper, etc. What are they thinking. After reviewing the fresh bakery products and the menu I decided to go for a sausage and peppers in a fresh baked roll and an M & M brownie.

When the cashier rung up our meal I saw that my choice was a Quiche. REDNECKS DON'T EAT QUICHE. The wifey understood my dilemma and offered to trade even up (that means I am going to pay for it later). She had ordered a ham and cheese roll. At least this thing had lots of cheddar type cheese. Rednecks like cheese.

The ham was your basic ham pretty good, but nothing outstanding. A little Cayenne pepper would go along way. Of course there was plenty of cheese and a homemade roll, which was pretty good. So overall this wasn't a bad choice.

As I mentioned earlier I also ordered an M & M Brownie. When you go to a joint that has bakery in it's name, you eat some light meal to get to dessert. So the Brownie was the main thing here. Rednecks love their sweets. I just can't believe it. The brownie was decent, but CiCi's makes a better tasting and richer tasting brownie and I can get all the pizza I can eat with it. I was expecting a much better brownie from a bakery. Ok guys get with it. Stop counting calories and load them babies up with all the rich ingredients, lard, fat, sugar, chocolate, sugar, chocolate, etc.

All my girlfriends on the blog need to go to Latham Bakery and grab some grub. All my redneck buddies need to go to Forney Wednesday to Sunday and get some Doe Belly's or 4T BBQ.
