Bubba's 33 - Mesquite

Bubba's 33 recently opened a new restaurant in Mesquite. It is very unusual for a new concept in restaurants to open their first location in North Texas in Mesquite. But here they are. So of course for each of my readers benefit it is necessary for me to eat there and give a review. So the wifey and me did the Bagurumba over to 33's.

You know it has redneck possibilities with the name Bubba's. That's a good rat there. Then walking in the door I run into a fellow redneck friend. So it's an invasion.

Let's get down to it, this is a sports bar that also sells food. There are flat screen TV's all around all walls. It you don't get your sports fix on here, you are hopeless. It is not an over the top bar and from where they sat us (at the back door), there wasn't a high presence of beers.

The big draw to the food here is the bacon ground up into the hamburger meat. Then bacon on top of the burger. If you are into bacon and I know many of you are, then this is home.

So we ordered Bubba's bacon burger and onion rings. The burger is 1/2 lb of meat, so we know I had to split with the wifey. So this is only 1/2 of a review.

As I said earlier, the burger has bacon ground up in the meat. You can't taste bacon, but it definitely has a better flavor than most burgers. The burger comes with all of the usual suspects (lettuce, tomato and onion), cheese, slices of Bubba's smoke bacon, and Bubba sauce. Bacon, Bacon, Bacon. The Bubba's sauce is different. It is a combination of BBQ sauce, mayonnaise and some other ingredients. It is going to take me a few trips to figure this sauce out. The burger could use more onions and some mustard would be nice also.

The burger comes with shoe string French fires. Now I really love thin sliced fries and these are just like I like em.

The waitress bragged about the onion rings and you know Mitcho loves anything onion. So we had to try a batch.  These are some of the best onion rings we have had lately. I like Twisted Root better, but this is a very close second. Good flavor and texture in the crust and a good crunchy onion. These are a good to go.

Overall, they have something here. I wish it was a little less bar, but the food is scrumptious. Count on seeing Mitcho here when you go. And you must go soon. See ya.

I recently had a server increase my tip after I left the restaurant. I went to a manger who did nothing. I won't be going back.

Braum's Hamburgers - N Galloway and Town East

Recently one of my readers requested I review the hamburgers at Braum's. Of course he thinks they are the best or he wouldn't have requested a review. This brings up a good point. I am open to suggestions of restuarants to review. All you have to do is send a request to info@whogivesacare.com.

So at lunch today we did the Kizomba over to Braums. I am well known here, but for ice cream. My specialty is the banana split. I have it for dinner on Sunday nights pretty regular. Yum, Yum. But I digress, today we are talking about hamburgers. I have eaten a good number of Braum's hamburgers in the past, but it has been a good while.

So I studied the menu and the 4 cheese hamburger looked interesting. So I ordered the 4 Cheesey with fries and a drink. Wow, this thing is redneck loaded with cheese. I am talking about thick flowing everywhere. Good to go. The meat patty is a 1/3 lb. patty and it is pretty tasty. The thing is, that is all that is on this burger. No sauce, onions, pickles, etc. None of the requirements. So I added some ketchup to it. It had a good taste and was a good burger. But it needs reinforcements.

The fries are the frozen kind that you can buy in the store and are large. I personally prefer a thinner fry that is crispy.

This was a good meal, but all burgers are judged against Whataburger. This burger needs more than 4 types of cheese to be better than a Whataburger. To be fair, I am going to have to go back and get the standard burger to compare to a Whataburger.

I planned on getting a Lime Sherbert ice cream cone after lunch, but the Wifey frowned on the idea. Oh well, maybe next time.

Olive Garden - Mesquite

I worked like a rented mule all day. Lunch was fast, early and sparse. So by early afternoon I was Haungry!!!!! Luckily the wifey was Haungry at dinner time also, so she was ok with eating a large meal. So we debated a number of options and she settled on Olive Garden. So we did the Jitterbug stroll over to Olive Garden.

Olive Garden is upscale from the mom and pop Italian restaurant, but they still unknowingly let rednecks in. Of course half the tables were empty tonight so they were happy to see my credit card.

We decided before we left home that we would share the Tour of Italy. We hadn't travelled much lately so we needed a good tour.

The meal starts off with peach tea. The first glass was just sweet tea (which is not all that bad), but the 2nd and following glasses had a good peach taste. You know us rednecks like plenty of liquid refreshments with substantial flavor.

Next is salad and breadsticks. Now your talking when I am eating Olive Garden breadsticks. This is my favorite bread of all restaurants. Get you some breadsticks. The salad has a great tasting dressing and is very tasty. Always a winner.

The tour of Italy is Chicken Parmigiana, Fetticini Alfredo and Lasagne. The Chicken Parmigiana has a nice crust and is loaded with cheese. This is one of my favorite chicken dinners. Yum Yum. I am not sure why Alfred got the Fetticini, but Fetticini Alfredo is all about maximum cheese and noodles. Rock on. Of the course it ends with Lasagne and I am a big fan of the Lasagne.

Overall this is a very good meal.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, so I hope your turkey is stuffed and on a plate in front of you and not in a chair across the table.

Texas Land & Cattle - Rowlett

So dinner rolled around again and we had a gift card to Texas Land & Cattle so I suggested to the wifey that we slide over there and get her a steak. You know she is high cotton folk that really likes a good steak. For me it comes round and fried.

So we did the Passacaglia over to Texas Land & Cattle. They might as well have a no rednecks allowed sign out front. So I had to change out of my "Rednecks Rule" T-Shirt to my dress UT T-Shirt so that they would let me in.

I have a history with Texas Land & Cattle. I have eaten in their restaurants twice in my life. Once in Austin and once in Richardson. Both times the waiter after I left bumped my tip up $20.00 from what I had indicated on the receipt (and I tip 20%). So of course, both times I challenged the charge through the credit card company and had the extra charge reversed. This has only happened to me twice and both times at T L & C. See below, I am now 3 for 3. So buyer beware, they will get in your billfold in unscrupulous ways.

After intense study of the menu we decided to go for the 2 for $25 special. An appetizer and two entrees for $25.00, not bad if it really happened. So the wifey went for the 6 oz Sirloin Steak and mashed taters. I went for the 7 oz chopped steak and mashed taters. We both had house salads.

We started the meal off with onion strings and these were pretty good. There was a very large stack of em, which more is good.

Then they brought bread. Good thing I have redneck ways because this bread was so hard I had to break out my Saws All to cut it. Besides being extremely hard, the bread just didn't have much taste. This will cost them. They didn't like the noise my Saws All made cutting the bread.

The salads we pretty decent salads, we still prefer Outback's over them, but it was a decent salad.

The wifey said she enjoyed her steak and the mashed taters were ok.

My chopped steak was ok and the mashed taters were ok, not the best I have ever had, but ok.

Now the bill comes. It seems that they brought me a 10 oz chopped steak instead of a 7 oz steak like I ordered, so they bumped me an additional $5.00. They didn't seem to see the problem with them upping my order without my permission. So they have now gotten me 3 times out of 3 trips. I am watching my credit card just in case. I will let you know tomorrow.

So if you give me a gift card to Texas Land & Cattle, I will give it to the homeless guy on the corner and let him go get ripped off.

Due to their unscrupulous ways I give'm a 3.27 (the lowest score I have ever given.)

Fuel City - Mesquite

FUEL CITY IS CURRENTLY BEING GUARDED BY THE GOOD WITCH OF THE WEST.
SHE IS FACING EAST.

YOU KNOW IT IS A GOOD PLACE WHEN THEIR LONGHORN HERD IS OUT FRONT IN THE YARD.

BEEF FAJITA TACOS!!!!!!!!!!!

APRICOT FRIED PIE.

So one of the ministers in my church has been talking about going to Fuel City with me, but has never moved off dead center. So finally, I decided it was time to load up on some Fuel City Tacos. You know Tacos has basically taken over redneck food for the soul. So I gathered up the wifey and we did the Watusi over to Fuel City. It is hard to believe that one of the best tacos in Texas is sold in a truck stop, but her we are.

It is kind of different here, you buy the tacos at the taco bar and it is cash only. You buy your drink and fried pie from the truck stop. Also at the taco bar there is also corn and the corn sells rapidly. What is strange is the corn is one line and checkout and the tacos is a separate line, 5 feet from each other and the food is made by the same people in the same place, so go figure.

So I ordered beef fajita tacos, some on corn and some on flour. I have gotten into putting the lime on the beef. The salsa doesn't add much, but go wild if you want to. Man this is a good taco, the beef fajita meat has a good flavor and it is loaded with onions and cilantro. And you know Mitcho luves onion.

The fried pie lady made us fresh pies, so we had to wait 3 or 4 minutes for them to cool down. This fried pie is large and has a great crust. Of course the apricot filling is to die for. So basically I could eat one of these every meal from now. Shhhhh don't tell my doctor.

The only problem here is there are only 8 seats at a window bar inside and the rest of the seating is outside. So mid-summer and winter are not a good time to eat here. Of course you can take the fixins home and eat there and the fried pie will still be warm when you get there.

So before it gets too cold, grab your buddies, wifey, kiddos and other passers by and get yourself over to Fuel City for some Texas best tacos and don't forget the fried pie.

SoCal Tacos - Food Truck

Mitcho goes to church at a happening cool church for millennials and 30 and 40 year olds. Shhh don't tell them they have been infiltrated by a card carrying redneck. You gotta like a church that pays for a food truck to feed the crowd after church. To make it even better there were a couple of bounce houses that kept the kiddos occupied and made lunch quieter. I am pretty certain that the bounce houses can also be infiltrated by us larger children.

So I lined up at the food truck. The options today were pork, chicken, black bean and fish. So when Mitcho arrived at the front of the line, there were only two tacos left in that batch and they both were chicken. So being the smart hungry guy I am, I went for the two chicken tacos. These guys were basically chicken, corn tortilla, and lettuce. Not much to them. They were pretty good, but if I am eating off a food truck, I am expecting some explosion in my mouth from a vast array of flavors. Not this time. Basically tortilla and chicken.

Through conversation I was told that the fish tacos were amazing. Now Mitcho had never had a fish taco. Just the thought of fish on a taco doesn't seem right some how. But the other guys at my table insisted that I taste the fish taco. So the taco lady came by with a batch of fish tacos. I broke down and tried one. The fish was a fried fish and tasted pretty good, corn tortilla and pink cabbage. It was ok, but Mitcho feels like it needed to be loaded with some spicey good stuff.

They also provided chips and salsa. The chips had a spice on them that made them more spicey than any of the tacos. The chips were a good.

Overall, the food truck experience is interesting, but the food needs some work. Of course it was free, so bring the food truck back next week.

McDonalds - Mesquite (Because my grandson said so)

What a way to start the week. I had an 8am dentist appointment this morning. You know growing up redneck, we didn't brush our teeth. Now many years later I am paying a heavy price in pain and dollars for it.

So since I had not eaten breakfast, I figured I would grab something on the way home. I remembered that Double Digits (oldest grand) highly advises Sausage McGriddles at McDonalds. Now DD is influenced by many different sources (TV, dad, and even sometimes Poppy), so his food choices are not always the same as mine. But travelling with him this summer I had watched him eat several and they did look tasty.

I did the Skank to McDonalds. I decided to order a Sausage McGriddle for breakfast. This is essentially a sausage patty in between two pancakes soaked in syrup. So pretty good fixins. I enjoyed it and recommend you try one also. Now you won't find any other suggestions for McDonalds on this blog, other than their Apple pies. But this is the real deal. So grab you one and see.

Giv'em a 7.5 (it would be higher  but it is McDonalds)
