Hot Rodz - Crandall, TX

When I come out of hiding, I hang out with this gang from my church, The First Fried Chicken Eating Mostly Non-Denominational Somewhat baptist Church. The gang is all excited about this girls high school basketball team in the state playoffs. So since I was out of hiding for a day or two the wifey decided we were going to see them play.

As you know that also was a good excuse to grab some grub. Crandall, TX today is being taken over by high falutin people in the last few years, but before that it was a high class redneck town. You know, my kind of folk. So you know there is some good redneck food in this place.

Before we went we searched for the menu for Hot Rodz and looked at pictures of their food. I had noticed red beans and sausage. When we get there it is not on the menu, but I notice a placard on one table (must be the redneck only table) that had the red beans and sausage on it. You can have my menu, my mind is made up. The meal also comes with corn bread. I am home, it just doesn't get any better!!!!

The corn bread was some the best corn bread I have had in a number of years. Man bring me another basket of these.

The red beans and sausage was as good as you can imagine. I didn't think about it till I was done, but I should have floated it in hot sauce. Man it would be so good you would just have to slap yo momma. Anyways it was very good. We just gonna have to come back here from time to time, basketball or no basketball. The folk I was with had a BLT and chicken fried steak sandwich and raved about them.

Kearney's Feed Yard

Kearney's actually use to be a true feed store, where you bought horse and cow feed, live chickens, rabbits, etc. Cool place to hangout. Till the fire. The owners wanted to be sure there would be another fire someday, so they built it back as a restaurant. Fortunately for me, it is in a county I have not been run out of YET.

The wifey and me go to the First Fried Chicken Eaten Mostly Non-Denominational and Somewhat Baptist Church. We are involved in a Community Group with some highfalutin folk where we communitize and study the Lords word. Our extra curricular activities are decided upon by our women folk. Around Valentines, they team up and decide we are taking them out to a fancy meal for Valentines. Of course us guys say "Yes Ma'am". It would actually be more appropriate to take my bride to Long John Silvers, Taco Bell or Bells Better Burgers, places the wifey has many memories. or indigestion.

They chose Kearney's Feed Store which at least brings back many memories.  The memories are about cute rabbits and chickens, not chicken fried steak, even though one leads to the other.

On the way to the restaurant I was given permission to order my own food instead of sharing what she wants. This is epic. I actually had to look at the menu and decide what I wanted. After careful review I settled on the spaghetti and meatballs.

The salad that came with the meal was pretty good. Nothing outstanding, but pretty good.

Texas toast came with the meal and Texas toast is good with anything.

The spaghetti and meatballs were ok. The spaghetti was like most, but the sauce left you wanting more flavor. I have had worse, but after have it as Pizza Getti, I have had the best and this is not it. We have eaten here before and had chicken fried steak which was very good. See previous blog of about a year ago.

We had a great time visiting with folk and getting to know them better.

Campisi's Mockingbird

As some of you know I have been on the run from the Federale Revenuers the last few months. So there is no safer place than to be with the FAMILY at Campisi's. This is the place you went to in the 50's to 70's to get mobbbbbbed up. If you look at their website, the history page is titiled La Nostra Storia. I am just saying.

The website talks about cousins in New York. I bet they had more than cousins in New York back in the day. I wonder how many times you have to go to be part of the FAMILY.

If you come form Dallas and always lived in Dallas, you owe it to yourself to at least once be a part of long history. Just don't take any police, sheriffs, FBI, ATF, etc.looking friends with you.

So the wifey was a real gamer and agreed to make the run with me. Of course by half way there she was talking about sharing. I hear their pizza's are great, but that will have to be another day, because the wifey isn't eating pizza outside Pizza Gett.

The wifey studies the menu and decides we are going to order the Mob Family Special (Pasta Combo Plate). Knowing I could be hungry at the end, I also ordered Joe's Special Garlic Toast.

We started off with the Garlic Toast. Now let's just stop right here. This is some mighty good fixins. We guess they have soaked the Texas toast in a vat of garlic butter. Man this was some good luvin.

The also brought the house rolls, but pass them up and go for the Garlic Toast. If I am going to eat the house rolls, I am taking my chain saw with me.

In seconds, they brought us house salads. The salad is the normal lettuce, green olives, peppers and house Italian dressing which was very good. Two thumbs up on the salad.

Within probably two minutes of ordering we already has the Garlic Toast and the Pasta Combo. Since we were sharing, they split it into two plates for us. This improves my chances of getting to eat. The Combo was floating is red sauce. I call it red sauce because it was not pasta sauce you expect on spaghetti, lasagna, etc. but it was very tasty. I liked it for a change of pace.

We each got one ravioli. This was noodle stuff filled with cheese. We kinda expected it to have meat in it. Covered in the sauce it was very tasty.

There was only one meatball and it was on the wifey's plate, so I figured I lost out there. But you know she luves me bunges, so she offered to half it with me. You can't get a better wifey. The half meatball was a very good meatball. The spaghetti with the sauce over it was also very good.

The lasagna was very similar to the ravioli, it was noodle and cheese. The cheese was pretty thick and was kind of hard to cut. It had one thin layer of something. If you looked real hard, there may have been a little meat there. Of the whole meal, the lasagna was the least of my favorites. I would say here that it is no where as good as the lasagna I cook, but then I cook world class lasagna that gets raving reviews by anyone that has the pleasure of partaking it.

Overall, this was a very good meal and a great experience of Dallas history. I just feel more FAMILY just being there.

Seven Mile Cafe - Mesquite

A friend of mine (known associate in crime) has posted lately about how good The Seven Mile Cafe is. The wifey has been reading the posts and has been intrigued about grabbing brunch there. Of course being a crick dweller, brunch is a little highfalutin for me, but once in a while I have to give in to the wifey and give her some high class experience. As you know, there is not a single thing you eat at brunch that can be caught and ate in the crick.  So anyway you look at it, I am going to be a fish out of water.

So being the man of the house, I took the wifey to The Seven Mile Cafe this morning. It is located in the restaurant row across Town East from Town East mall. It is the building next to where Black Eyed Pea use to be. I can't even remember what restaurants have been in this building, but I know it has been quite a few.

You can take a redneck out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the redneck. So when it came time to order, the only rightful thing for me to order was biscuits and gravy and burnt bacon. The wifey recognizing my infinite wisdom, ordered the same thing. She is awfully smart.

The biscuit is kind of cakey according to the wifey. They were good, but I like the flakey ones better. The gravy was pretty good. The bacon was burnt just like I like it, so it was very good.

The folk around us ordered a number of interesting breakfasts. This isn't your normal breakfast joint, it is uppity kind of folk breakfast. It was good. You do want to talk to your banker about a loan before you go.

Son of a Butcher- Lower Greenville

So we did the rain go away splash to Son of a Butcher.

It's pretty cool when your oldest grandson (CBoss) is giving you restaurant advice. He is becoming a full grown foody just like his Poppy. Of course for both of my followers, this will mean the restaurants will be for a younger crowd going forward. Not a bad thing of a majig (thingofamajig say it fast).

The hamburger is staples for this hard core redneck. I have experienced 19 cent Krystal Burger, McDonalds Hamburger all the way to the Bartonville Store wagyu burger.

Lower Greenville is where the cool people hang out, so I haven’t been there much. I did feel a little cooler just being there. Nowhere near Blue Bell Ice Cream cool though.

Son of a Butcher is sold out to sliders. That is the only entre they serve. So sliders or your out. They do have a few sides, but my diet won’t let me get the onion rings I want. You know this is my kind of place when it serves a bologna slider. Mostly it is wagging you beef (wagyu) and chicken.

I ordered the Classic slider, which is wagging you beef, comeback sauce, cheese and pickles. I also ordered The Irishman slider, which is wagging you beef, peppered bacon, sharp Irish cheese, Irish stout aioli, and caramelized onions. These are some quality burgers. The beef is what makes it. The added sauces etc are nice but it is the beef that sets it off. Show me the meat! Better than Whataburger, sorry Texas, I know, I know. I eat at Whataburger once a week so I am on the team. Our daughter, darlin’, says go in good weather and sit outside and people watch.

Overall this was a good meal. Givem a 7.974379.

Ole West Bean & Burger - Canton

Me and the wifey traveled to Canton to meet with kin folk to discuss our upcoming family gathering and mud cat fry. When you are crick high class everything has to be right for a family feed and squabble.

We had a good session and I am going to be busy the next month catching the mud cat and getting the crick ready. Good times. Some of our stories were actually true. Believe it or not.

We chose Ole West Bean & Burger because it was half way and you know Bean is a definite attraction. Pretty had to miss there.

I ordered the Ultimate Burger Jr. (Jr. means 1/4 pound instead of 1/2 pound.) This burger has lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, jalapenos, bacon, and whatever is left in the kitchen sink. I ordered the basket, so I got fries also. This was a good burger, not the best in the world, but a  pretty good burger. The fries were just normal fries, nothing outstanding, throw some spice on these things and give it some life.

The beans were a disappointment. There were two choices, pinto and ranch style. The ranch style were straight out of the can. I can do that at home. Wifey maybe??? The pinto beans were just basic beans. When you put beans in your name, I expect some life in the beans. The pinto's needed some chili powder and maybe some paprika. Come on, either spice em up or take bean out of your name.

The best part of the meal was the free Blue Bell ice cream and Mitcho always likes ice cream and free. Can't miss with that combo.

Dog Haus Richardson

It was time for me to ketch up with one of my back woods buddies. We spent the better part of an hour swapping crick and back woods stories. Most of them not true. But you know we had a blast conjuring one to out do the other.

The Dog Haus was about half-way between the crick and back woods. So we agreed to gather up there. Of course both of us redneck types really appreciate a good hot dog. I mean there are steaks, then there are hot dogs. It's not fried bologna, but pretty good fixins.

I ordered the Das Brat. Bratwurst sausage, onion, sauerkraut and brown mustard. Now this is one good dawg. The sausage was very good and the onion, sauerkraut and brown mustard explodes in your mouth. At least the explosion is in the mouth and not in the tree house next door. You know you can't trust a redneck with some high quality fireworks.

Because of some crazy diet I am on to reduce my carbon footprint, a full experience hot dog probably isn't on that diet, but the wifey wasn't with me, so no rules.

I will be going back. This was some classy dawg house.
