Rasing Cane's - Mesquite

About 6 months ago, Raisin Cane's opened a restaurant in Mesquite. Everyone has been raising cane about it ever since. For probably 4 to 5 of those 6 months it was drive-thru only and they had so many in the drive-thru that they were out in the road to. So somebody likes this place. We already have several chicken shacks in our rotation as it is, so it is not like we needed another one. Buy you know, when everybody goes there, you gotta try it.

So we spent most of the day messin and gummin around with CBoss, Lil' Darlin, and The mayor, you know giving em a hard time. After we shipped them off back to their parents, we decided the day had come to giver Cane's a whirl.

This place is about the simplest operation I have eaten in. They have chicken fingers, fries, toast, cole slaw and a sauce. Nothing else. At this simple you would think they are awesome at every turn. According to my sources  it is awesome. Maybe the quality varies from location to location.

I ordered the 3 finger box. This means 3 chicken fingers (I didn't know chickens had fingers?), fries, toast, sauce and a drink.

The batter/crust on the chicken was very good. Unfortunately my chicken was not cooked fully, so it left something to be desired.

The fries were your basic normal fries.

After hearing all raves about the sauce, I could barely taste it. What is all the fuss about. I choose bbq, honey mustard, hot sauce, etc. Something with a little zing.

The toast was ok, but it would be better if it was toasted on both sides. The bread is very think, and it was only very lightly toasted. I am a burn it then start cooking kind of guy.

Overall, not a great experience. I guess I will stay a Popeye's kind of guy, and have you tried their biscuits, sure beats the toast.

Givem a 7.0.

Alfonso's Italian - Casa Linda

I spent most of the day down at the crick, whittlin and fishin for mudcat. Life can't get any better. Along the way my good friend KD calls me on my smarter phone. Not that KD, but Arkansas KD that is a good guy. We talked about places to get our grub on and he mentioned that when he wandered into North Texas one step ahead of the law he laid low at Alfonso's. KD gave good marks to the rolls, salad, etc. He seemed very pleased with their fixins.

As you know I sacrifice my body for the benefit of my readers so I told the wifey that dinner would be at Alfonso's. She is a big fan of the fettucine alfredo so she only whacked me several times for telling her where we were eating. She is so good to me. We hopped into her jalopy and did the tango to Casa Linda.

This is a nice modern decorated place that has good service. I ordered Baked Lasagna which came with a salad and rolls. The rolls are garlic rolls and always very tasty. The salad was above average with a home made Italian dressing that wasn't over powering, it was just right. The lasagna is better than most. Not as greasy as many places lasagna is.

I have to admit when I talk about lasagna that my homemade lasagna is world famous and powerful good. The next is Pizza Getti lasagna which comes with garlic toast that I think I like better than garlic rolls. And I have to throw Olive Garden in there for their lasagna is 3rd, the salad is one of the best and the garlic rolls are to die for.

I want to thank KD for his suggestion. I am always open for suggestions of places to review. Just leave a comment and when I can figure out how to read it, we will get on over there to review it.

Petty's Steak and Catfish-Lindale, TX

Due to the Covid 19 (Corona with no Lyme) I have been trapped in the big city with intellectual types and other citified type folk. I have become concerned that my level of redneckism has diminished in the last year. It was time to do something about this dire emergency. So the wifey and myself loaded up and took off for the woods of East Texas to associate with well healed rednecks. You know the types, their cows are called Oreo's and they give chocolate milk. Can't get any better than that. The more time you spend up and down Hwy 80 to the east, the better off you will be.

As you know eating is a major past-time of mine. So twice a day we are forced to enter the world of citified people to grab some grub. In looking for a place, I discovered that Petty's has opened a feed alot in Lindale. Back when it was in Hawkins we would swing by in the afternoon for PIE. I don't remember ever eating any pre-dessert food, but boy do I remember the PIE. So I grabbed up the wifey and came out of the woods and headed for Lindale.

If you haven't figured it out yet, the wifey and me are true fishermen. We eat fish everywhere we can. So you guessed it, we ordered fired catfish for dinner. This meal came with two filets of fish, loaded potato, salad, rolls and hush puppies.

The fish is probably the second best we have had and we have been in all of the fish joints in East Texas. Go ahead and name'em, I have been there. The best is Doe Belly's in Forney bar none, but this is very close. I especially like the breading on the fish. It was not spicy like Doe Belly's but it was very very good. The salad was a very good salad, better than most. You wouldn't believe the baked potato. They gave us more fixin's than could possibly fit inside the potato. So needless to say, it was nicely doctored when I was done. Yum, Yum. The rolls were good but not outstanding and the hush puppies were a little lacking, but with all of the food I had in front of me, something wasn't gonna get ete anyway. Especially because pie was coming.

Did I mention PIE. These folks do pie. I opted for the Chocolate pie. I mean really tasty chocolate, great crust and meringue. Yummy, Yummy.

This meal was so good that two nights later we went back for a second helpin'. It took two days to be hungry again.

Grandy's - Mesquite

As usual at lunch and dinner every day me and the wifey do the food dance. What do you want to eat? What do you want to eat? We went there two days ago. etc. etc. etc. As the wifey started the dance tonight she asked what I wanted, so I threw out Spring Creek BBQ or Jason's Deli. I might as well said the Ritz in Manhattan. So she volleys with Grandy's. Really we haven't eaten there in probably 25 years. What I remember was greasy food and a pretty good cinnamon roll. The wifey entered into dirty pool by reminding me several times how good the cinnamon roll is there. That is just not fair. So against my better judgement but my desire for a cinnamon roll, I gave in. So we did the lard grease shuffle to Grandy's.

As it turns out the wifey was wanting greasy fried chicken. Check it off her list as that is what she got.

I ordered the chicken fried steak, mashed taters and baked beans. It comes with a roll. I did top it off with a cinnamon roll. The chicken fried steak crust was actually pretty good. As for the steak it turns out it is meat substitute kind of stuff. You need a really lot of pepper, salt and Tobasco sauce to get any kind of taste out of this stuff. The mashed taters were a cheap instant tater mix with nothing added to them to give them any flavor. The baked beans were probably the second best part of this meal. The roll was cold and just didn't taste very good. If it was hot, it might be good, but I won't ever know. The cinnamon roll was pretty good but not as good as I remember and not good enough to override the other stuff.

Thank goodness I keep a good supply of antacid.

Towards the end of the meal the wifey said she had learned her lesson and it would be more than 20 years before she comes back. Yes.

Buc'ees - Terrell

I have made it clear in the past that I married way way up. The wifey is a high class cityfied gal with impeccable  tastes at least for a cityfied gal. So once in a while I have to man up and give her some top class treatment. You know that means a very fancy meal. Tonight it was time to bust out the good stuff to stay in good graces, which is very difficult for me. Being the smart guy I am, I threw out Buc'ees to see if it would land. Man she was over the top happy. Nothing like a Buc'ees meal on a Saturday night.

We loaded up the family jalopy and started out doing the Cinderella slide to Buc'ees. Once we got to Hwy 80 it turned into the Louisiana Crawl. The wifey was almost out of drool by the time we finally made it to Terrell. I couldn't keep up with her going into the store.

Buc'ees has a very wide variety of foods. I am told by my known associates that have very wide resumes on the waist line that the BBQ here is right smart good and it smells really good in the store. Other friends brag on the jerky in which they have more flavors than Carter has pills. But the Mitcho is a kolache man. Kolache must mean meal in a home made bun.

The wifey went for the Ham and Cheese, but I went for two of the Sausage and Cheese Kolaches. Man these things are goooooood. Not Czek Stop in West, Tx good, but mighty good. The bread has that wonderful fresh out of the oven sweet taste. The sausage has a nice flavor and cheese is always a good extra. I also went for a cinnamon roll. Now right here, Buc'ees is a tie with the Czek Stop. The Czek Stop cinnamon roll is to die for, but Buc'ees is just as good. I am thinking about going back later to get another one. Wow this was good. The only down side is there is no place to eat at Buc'ees, so we eat in the car with the A/C running. It was only 106 today.

So if you are heading east or west on I-20 or Hwy 80 and you have a hankering for a mighty good meal, take the Buc'ees exit (you know, the one that signs have been advertising for the last 100 miles, I don't care where you came from) and grab you up some of these fine fixins and get me a half dozen cinnamon rolls and drop them off at the house. I will be happy to pay you later.

Four Winds Steakhouse - Wills Point, Tx

Life has been good for me and the wifey (except of course for the Corona Virus with No Lyme) and we decided to celebrate a little bit. The wifey has an affection for dead cow medium well done. So I decided it was steak time. You may not believe it, but occasionally I can get out of trouble.

I hear tell that the cattle rustlers at Four Winds can catch and cook up a mighty good steak. As you know Four Winds was the 55 Ranch which was owned by Lee Roy Jordan, a true and respected Dallas Cowboy back when the Cowboys were a respectable team that we were all proud of, not like this group of Wannabees that have a longer list of arrest records than positive accomplishments. You can't find this bunch anywhere on Super Bowl Sunday. But I digress.

So we did the Long 20 to Wills Point during rush hour on Hwy 80, boy was that ever fun.

This is one of those fancy places that you order everything individually. So we settled on salad, meat and dessert. You don't go to one of these places to eat vegetables. Of course vegetables are not a main stable in my diet anyway.

I ordered the house salad. This thing has Mesclun Mix, Bacon Buttermilk Dressing and Honeyed Pecan croutons. Let me break it down for you. Mesclun Mix means weeds that I spray Round Up on to get them out of my yard. The Bacon Buttermilk dressing was ok, not as tasty as a good Good Value ranch or Thousand Island, but it was ok. The honeyed Pecans were a way to get rid of all the pecans that fell from the pecan trees on the ranch last fall. Of course pecans are fancy and I like em, but a good seasoned crouton would have been better.

About half way through the salad the waitress dropped off two Jim Bowie knives on the table. This really scared me. My first thought was I was about to have to field dress the bovine prior to the grilling part. I have done this and it was not as much fun as it sounds. My next thought was, this was going to be a fancy steak. You should be able to cut it with a fork according to their cred.

We both ordered a  filet mignon. Wow, this thing was very tender. It would melt in your mouth. Did I say tasty. It had a great flavor. I am guessing they threw some spices on during grilling or they fed the stolen cows with their pecans.

We opted to forgo vegetables and go directly to dessert. I opted for the chocolate cheesecake. This was some right scrumptious cheesecake. Not quite as good as Cheesecake Factory, but very good. There was no saving part of it for tomorrow. The wifey got the chocolate mouse. She indicated it was very good. I heard some talk of licking the bowl and I think when I was not looking some of this may have happened. She is a chocoholic.

The service was great. They were as fast and efficient like a Lee Roy Jordan blitz.

So if you have a months pay laid back or a friend with deep pockets, gather the gang up and head to Four Winds. Just don't drive your herd of cattle this way. They may wind up on the grill.

Ten 50 BBQ - Richardson

Being a high falutin redneck with a reputation of solving problems with the revenuers, occasionally a good ole redneck finds himself in need of powerful advice on how to dodge the revenuers. If I find one with money in their pocket, I have'em buy me a lunch for my troubles. Today I had one of those rednecks in need with money in their pocket and we met at Ten 50 BBQ after I had done the Moonshine Boot & Scoot to Richardson .

I had never been here before. This is a high class BBQ joint. The deco is modern Millennialist, not deer heads on every wall redneck country.

This is an order your choice meat by the pound and pay for each side. Not the ole get a plate which comes with two sides. So I set the redneck in need back some in his pocket change.

I ordered the chopped beef samwhich. Normally, chopped beef means all the bad pieces of the brisket that have been cut off in the last 30 minutes chopped to death. Not here. The chopped beef was slices of the lean BBQ chopped up some (really needed a little more chopping but who is complaining). I thought they were trying to stack the whole cow on the buns. I don't think I have ever seen a BBQ samwhich that thick in meat. I knocked a good amount of the meat off on the side for after and still had a good sized samwhich. This was some good Q with a real nice flavor.

I also ordered their brisket baked beans, which were a flavored up pork N beans with brisket mixed in. So pretty good fixins rat here.

So if you have fought all morning to get anywhere on 635 and end up in the Richardson area at lunch time, call up a few friends and have'em meet you at Ten 50. Who knows one of em may have extra money in their pocket and buy your lunch. You can always hope.
