Papins - Belt Line in Sunnyvale

So after a hard day up in the crick fishing for mud cat and crawdaddin, the wifey informs me that just west of the crick is a new Mexican food establishment what we haven't tried. Apparently that was some sort of crime of which I was guilty of. So being the smart man I am we went to Papins for dinner.

When we drove up it was of some concern that no one else was there. That is not a good sign for a restaurant during dinner hours. But we barged on in anyway.

The waitress showed  up soon with chips and hot sauce. Now this can make or break a Mexican restaurant in the first few minutes. You know I have Chipper with me, so they better be good cause I got a true expert with me. First thing, there was not a salt shaker anywhere to be seen in the whole restaurant. How can you serve chips and not have any salt to liven up the flavor. That might be UnAmerican. Oh well, we still gonna eat the chips. The chips had a very nice crunch to them which I liked better than many other establishments of Mexican food. The chips had a little different taste which Chipper liked. That's good rat there. Now for the salsa, this is very important food. This salsa was bland in our opinion. I buy a Kroger brand salsa off the grocery store shelf that is much tastier than this. The salsa was a bust.

Since we always share a meal, Chipper ordered an enchilada plate with 3 enchiladas, salad, rice and charro beans. The salad was just lettuce with a few little tomatoe pieces to give it color. No points here. The rice was just rice. The charro beans had a different flavor to them which we couldn't identify. They were ok, but could have used some chili powder to liven them up. The beef enchiladas were a disappointment. The beef had a decent flavor, but the tortilla it was wrapped in was not good at all. Chipper ordered the ranchero sauce which turned out to be a reddish orange sauce that had no taste.

Overall, this would have a hard time competing with Oklahoma Mexican Restaurants and there is no good Mexican food outside of Texas. Pretty disappointing. We now know why no one else was there. The parking lot is a good judge of how good a restaurant is. If the parking lot is full and overflowing, loosen your belt because  you are about to grab some mighty good grub. But an empty parking lot is a warning that is being shouted at you.

O’Desi Aroma - McKinney (Indian)

So I was wandering on up to McKinney to hang out with a couple of kindred spirits. While up there I ran into an ole known associate who use to hide out at my church with me, The First Fried Chicken Eaten mostly Baptist somewhat Non-Denominational Church. We decided we needed some extended time to hash out old times. So we decided to grab some grub. Now my known associate apparently doesn't eat any American foods or anything from the creek, so we had to wander into this Indian food restaurant, Desi Aroma. This was my first experience in an Indian restaurant. I had a neighbor bring us some Indian Food down to the crick for us to try one time and it was ok. So I wasn't totally scared, but I had heard tales of curry.

I studied the menu a long time and googled a lot of things to see what I was willing to risk my life over. I finally settled on Korma, a rich cashew almond curry with mixed vegetables (think a thick soup/sauce) with chicken (you know Yardbird). Also, I ordered garlic naan.

So here I am risking my life, and all of sudden, hey this isn't too bad. Of course chicken is chicken. The Korma was very interesting a little spicy but a nice flavor. Hey I might do t his again sometime. The naan was basically a flatbed with oil and garlic on it. Now I could eat my weight in this stuff. So overall, I survived the indian food war with a win and a promise someday I will go do it again.

Of course when I was done my Texas drawl had a little Indian twang to it.
